Q:

Upgrade Time

I haven’t posted in quite a while for one reason or another but yesterday as I shot my last rat of the evening I got to thinking…. “I never did any major upgrades” and what better place to go to other T.A.G.! My gun is pretty much stock Talon SS 12 inch .22 LDC Wok-Butt. All I shoot is Predator Pellets. This is what I’m thinking about doing I know some of you guys can help me get on the right path.

1. I want to go up to .25 hard hitting
2. Most concerned with shot count and insane accuracy
3. I don’t know if .25 comes in .12in barrel I am willing to go longer but I would like to keep the gun as short as possible.
4. I know I will need a new LDC or can I have mine ported
5. I need someone to do the work

Many of you know me for my love of shooting rats and I haven’t had the chance to upgrade my numbers …. As of last night my shot count is up to ***5127*** I do a lot of baiting now and trash day dropped from two days a week to one day a week so I have way more rodents running around.

Ok let me know what I need to do.

Thanks Riff for the insight I’m going to pick up a 12in .25 barrel and try it out, I’ve also been thinking about picking up an Etac Reg to off set my tank.

Mike with a 12″ barrel your standard valve will offer you good power with decent efficiency particularly in the urban environment your used to hunting in.

You really only need a bigger valve when you lengthen the tube or absolutely have to have the extra oomph. There is no free lunch however. You either get great power and less shots, or less power and more shots. The balance is up to you.

A full power .25 like mine will pass thru a skunk and ricochet off into the distance quite easily. I know, Ive seen it do it.
Depending on your shooting area, that might not be what you want to do.
Its fun though. 😛

That is incredible. Can you elaborate on how you did that? Over how many yers? How do you set up? Lighting?

It’s been since 2008, I had a Gamo Big Cat .177 but I had a lot of runners then I grabbed my Talon SS and it was game over. I hunt from the second floor back porch of the houses as I said earlier it’s an Alley system so there’s alway trash and food for them. I usually bait about a half hour befor I start my shooting, I bait with leftovers and mostly bread they love bread. The lighting is usually mute but after about ten minutes my eyes adjust and I just start send those .22 Preds down barrel.

The guy at R&L Air Guns sells an “Extreme” valve that replaces the innards of your Talon valve…a simple screw-in replacement. He even sends you the tool to take out the old valve. Costs less than a $100, and the increase in power is incredible.

I went to 14″ on my Talon .25 with an LW barrel from Jim Gaska.

The difference between shooting rats with a .22 and a .25 is the “Splatter” factor. The rats will find your change a “gut wrenching” experience 😆

PS: Oh…don’t forget Tony at TalonTunes also offers all this stuff too!

Hey RiffRaff yeah it’s been a while, so I won’t have to upgrade my valve or anything? Also is there a way for me to get more shots?

Hi Mike, long time no see.

Sounds like your rifle is working just fine as-is, but completely understand your desire for the .25. (I never shoot .22 anymore)

I believe dropping in a 12″ barrel will give you what you want. Short length, better impact at the target, almost as quiet a shot as a .22 cal.
You will not be able to hide the impact noise of the pellet though, and it will be considerably louder than .22 believe me. 😉

Accuracy wise, the .25 has some really good pellets to use these days.
JSB kings are most people favorites. JSB makes predators in .25 too, most people like these but accuracy drops off past 40 yards (± some yards reports vary).

As far as modding your can on the end, anybody with a lathe can open up the bore a little. My advice would be to mount the barrel and can, and look thru it to check alignment. You may be lucky and not need to mod it.

Very cool. Once when I had more time, I would bait blackbirds and starlings. Also, crows.

But I’ve never come into a setup like that. That’s pretty sweet.

Are there different varieties of rats you’re seeing? Do any get wise to you?

From what I know there is the “Norway Rat” & the “Roof Rat” and yes I do believe they are aware of me but when I bait I notice that they are more concerned with the food. A big thing I found out is they love to lick the blood of other rats that have been shot I easily get a mound of 5-10 rats off of one initial rat with a trail of blood running from him.

Hey Mike,

I’d like to know more about your rat hunting methods? Are you in the city or rural?

Thanks,

Paul

Hey Paul, I own a lot of rental properties in Baltimore, MD. And Baltimore has an Alley system that is pretty much set up to be a perfect Rat hunting Zone. At first I use to just hunt what a saw but now I pre bait the location with bags with leftovers in it, a old loaf of bread which I find they love the most. Once I bait I let everything sit for about 45 minutes to let the rats get comfy and then it’s .22 Pred time. The next morning there’s rats brains everywhere!
