Q:

To "shroud" or not "shroud"…

Hi everyone, So I am in the process of ordering material to start my build next week, and I am puzzled as to whether or not I should put a “shroud” on the gun. I was reading up on airgun laws for the US and was surprised at what lengths the BATFE goes through if you have a “silencer” for anything, even airguns as long as it can “silence” a firearm. I did read that as long as you cant silence a firearm with it then it is not a silencer, but then my airgun will have to look more like the talon ss which I dont like as much. Is there any way in which I could build a different “shroud” that would not get me in prison for 15 years?

I do not want the BATF getting involved with airguns

Neither do I!

That’s one reason I got the permit ❗ I don’t want to be the poor sucker with bad luck that “sets a precedent” by getting 10 years behind the walls for some bullshit law. I don’t like the laws either and I do my part by supporting the NRA and voting EVERY time the polls are open. How many here have contacted (or even know who they are) their state/US representatives on the subject? U can bet your sweet ass I have!
The laws here in Oklahoma aren’t as stringent as other states which is another reason for getting it while I still can.

getting the BATF to give you permits for airgun parts is giving them the right to start controlling airguns

Getting a required permit for an existing shitass law doesn’t give them any more power. I would think new/amended laws are required for that.

Did you get to talk to the BATF guy about airguns at all? What do they think of them?

The gut feeling I got from the conversations I had with the Federales was kinda ho-hum. The decent blue-blooded USA airgun folks like us shouldn’t worry so much but thanks for the $$$ anyway!
I rest my case. 8)

RiffRaff–You’ve raised some good points. 😉

Maybe I think about this all wrong, but I do not want the BATF getting involved with airguns.

Laws in this country are enforced by setting precedents, and getting the BATF to give you permits for airgun parts is giving them the right to start controlling airguns IMHO.

But.. it is probably safer for you if you do get the permit. I just dont want to see the day where we are limited to bb-gun velocities and forced registration of our airguns.

Thanks for the replies. I would be all for registering with the BATFE, except that living in NY I cant legally own a silencer at all.

Nice Martin. Its kinda messed up though. You have to get a “firearm” permit for your gun but airgun manufacturers can sell them with them already installed. Did you get to talk to the BATF guy about airguns at all? What do they think of them?

You can also get a stamp/permit through BATFE and own any “device” you want.

I got my BATFE stamp/permit to “manufacture and register a firearm (silencer)” back in Aug.’07. I can make 1 silencer for 1 airgun only! $200 for the first year and 50 bucks each year after. Paperwork/background checks were easy here in Oklahoma. The BATFE guy I talked to was very nice/cool and said he’s seen 4-5 applications like this for airguns this year.

If you build everything from a scratch, then hide your barrel in a bull shroud. Something like BSA Super Ten Bull Barrel, or Daystate Air Ranger, or Theoben MFR…
