Q:

Thinking of getting a PCP; concerned about air tank safety

I’m thinking of getting a pcp air gun but I’m worried about the safety of the pressurized air tanks. I was thinking it would be convenient to buy one of those mini air hog tanks and use it in a backpack when shooting but is that safe? I’d hate for the thing to blow up or something. Does anyone know of any situation where an air tank exploded? How about if it’s summer time and it gets 95+ degress? Thanks

Just remember the fitting cost about $140 more

Uuuuh… lol. Run that by me again? What kind of fitting? I thought from what I’ve read that if I buy an airgun with the scuba adapter and I have a scuba tank filled with air that’s all I need… did I miss something and if so what??

For scuba you are right. You need a yoke and connecting hose and fittings not to bad in price. For CF tanks the fittings are much more expensive

Bottom line; Quit worrying about it. Worry more about rabid dogs biting you. And I’ll bet that paranoia hadn’t even crossed your mind! AKULA

I carry a glock 45 for that 😉

Thanks all of you for the information, especially AKULA.

Do any of you guys know a good place to get a reasonably-priced one? Also is it ok to get aluminum or do I want to stay with steel or carbon fiber for safety reasons?

Thanks again

Pomona Airgun has a good deal on a setup. Mac1 sometimes will get in takes and he will sell them for $100 which is a great deal. Just remember the fitting cost about $140 more

Ronald; I’ll address the high temp issue as I’ve extensive experience with high pressure air. I’ve been a SCUBA diver for 40 years.

When a HP tank over pressurizes due to high temp the tank will blow its burst disc. This disc resides on the valve on both the Airforce tanks and on all SCUBA tanks. When a burst disc does let go it won’t hurt you. It will startle you but you’ll have little more than wind blown hair if the disc lets go. I’ve had this happen to me with a SCUBA tank all of once in all the years I’ve been diving.

As far as HP tanks exploding; It has rarely (very rarely) happened in the past but current testing methods and modern materials have made this hazzard a thing of the past. I wouldn’t worry about tanks ‘exploding’ unless you’re carrying your tanks in the trunk of a car and you get rear ended. If an HP valve gets broken off you’ve got a missile on your hands.

Remember fireman carry these fiberglass and carbon fiber tanks into burning buildings. So have no worries. Be careful and treat them with respect and you will be fine.

I’ve never heard of an airgun or scuba tank exploding from being carried around in high temperatures.

I wouldnt worry about it exploding from being out in 100 degree temperatures. I wouldnt leave it in a car in summer though.

Only scuba tanks I’ve heard about exploding, exploded during filling because the person filling it didnt follow proper procedure and made a mistake and the only guns were filled with Oxygen instead of HPA.
