Q:

Talon 18 inch barrel – 0.177 shot strings

Hi folks, i’m new here and have just bought myself a Talon in .177 cal.

Before buying the Talon, I read most of the posts under this section and the info was very useful in deciding whether to go in for an SS or a standard Talon. Since my caliber of choice is .177, I learned from the forum that an 18 inch barrel is the minimum length required for consistency in the smaller caliber.

Out of the box the shot to shot variation was too large for my liking so I did as the gurus suggested and reduced the top hat gap to 0.075 inch which was the lowest it would go.

I’ve run a few shot strings through a Combro chrony and here are the figures.

0.177 Beeman Kodiak pellets

Start at 195 BAR / Top Hat – .075 inch / PW at 6-0

I then reduced the top hat gap to .043 inch by placing a small steel washer between the top hat and the valve. The start pressure was lowered to 185 BAR and the PW was set to 5-8

I ran out energy using the airforce pump which is why the last two strings are fewer shots 🙂

The second shot string with the top hat gap at .043 inch seems to be better. The shot to shot variation is less than the other strings.

I would like the gurus to comment on these shot strings and let me know if this can be bettered with the existing setup. I am aware that the hammer weight and the spring can be changed but would like to the best I can with the stock parts.

Cheers
Tachy
