TAG’s future. Read me
Hello everyone.
I see that the site is back at the speed that it should be, which is nice. I haven’t been around for a few days due to some really heavy personal issues that have knocked me for six and really zapped both my spirits, concentration and happiness. That being said, I’m trying to take things in stride and go hour by hour (no good just moping around right?). Anyway, onto the TAG.
We all know that we have a wonderful website here with a great bunch of people (and a super-awesome-cool Admin….:p) but things can always be made better. So, in that vein I want everyone to put their Thinking Caps on and think of ways that we can improve what we have here. That is, make the site better, prettier, easier to use, more popular, etc. It doesn’t matter how big or small your idea is as anything that makes the site better is good.
Oh, and in answer to Cygnus’s question, I can only put a block on Avatar sizes if I force people to host their Avatars here rather that at ImageShack etc. That may not sound like a big deal, but as the site grows that will be a relatively big slice of storage and Bandwidth. I will do that and see how things go though.

Same here Tron, have had some of the same in my life as well. Take care everyday gets a little better after you hit the bottom, which i hope you have. That way you can start looking towards the peak. Go lift some weights, been waiting for that 300lb press, you’ll feel better after.

Just a clarification on the Avatar issue.
The Avatar is actually the small pic beneath your username in the post. What was so big in some of the posts was the attached Photobucket or other photo hosting site pic that is being used as part of a signature.
Also, do those links to Photobucket actually take any space in a server que or are they just rerouted realtime as I suspect because some old pics now say.. “Photo not available” or similar.
This seems to be true of the Avatars as well as I have seen some posts commenting on someones odd avatar that had obviously changed to the new one even in the old posts. This is because your current profile is referred to even in old posts and contains your current Avatar, so it changes in all of your posts. (and probably your signature also..)
So,
can the forum software also control, block, or autosize linked pics?
Other than the effect on the reading plane, is there any other effect?
(I guess it would affect download of any post containing it as it loaded the oversized pic.)

Would it be hard to get away from the photobucket thing? I was a member of another forum for years, and when you wanted to post a pic(s) you just hit “Manage Attachments” which was a option everytime you posted, and it went straight to Browse “My pictures”
Just send as many as you want and attach like a regular email without having to go to another site, then brouse, upload, paste ect. Way easier and faster. Just a thought that comes to mind.

DNC: Adding code to phpbb to automatically limit Avatar size has never been that high of a priority as most people don’t post huge Avatars (except Butcher, lol) but I will get it done in the next few days, along with other things.
Anyone have any feelings about a live Chat room?

Yes, if the Avatars are hosted here then I have full control over the size and dimensions of them, but if they are remotely linked then I don’t as phpbb doesn’t check. However, if I switched it over, which takes all of two seconds I can see everyone going “hey, where did my Avatar go???!!!”.
Edit: It allows infinite MYSQL Databases.
Thats weird, you should be able to limit remote avatars. I know there was an avatar issue in 2.0.1… It needs to be fixed as someone could easily use a 300000×1 avatar and screw stuff up. If you hosted the avatars here, couldn’t you limit the size of the avatars?
We need a kills tracker where people can enter in their kills, a description (animal, date, weight, idk..), a picture, and a story. Then it would keep track of peoples stats… lol How many databases does your host allow?
I like the idea of a “Quick Response” feature on a thread. They use to have one on the Air Arms Club that was cool.
Also the had a feature you did not have to open a post to read the first and last post. Just by placing the curser over the title of the thread you could instantly see what the first and last response was about. This way you can quick scan and see if you actually want to open the post or move on.
These to features are very handy.
