Q:

Some thoughts on barrel length and pellet impact

I noticed that with a long barrel such as the 24″ in my Condor, at lower velocites like in the 750-800 FPS range, POI tends to be anywhere. I assume that it is because of the length of the barrel; by the time the valve has been opened, the air behind the pellet moves the gun a bit before the pellet completely exits the barrel, thereby affecting POI. At velocities in the 850 FPS range, my POI becomes tighter, until it reaches around 950 FPS, where it is dead-on.

I’m beginning to think that the Condor, or at least a barrel that is 24″ shouldn’t be used to shoot at low velocities if accuracy is desired… unless the gun is precision-crafted to absorb almost all recoil or rear-jetting, which is almost impossible. I think that a barrel about 12″ long will still be dead-on accurate at 700 FPS due to the short length and how little distance the pellet has to travel to completely escape it before the barrel movement affects its POI. And, subsequently, 18″ barrels should be dead-on at 800 FPS and above (before going supersonic). What do you think?

Anyway, I like to shoot at low velocities due to the area I shoot my Condor at. I’m thinking of getting either a 12″ or 18″ barrel from Air Force.

Spinj, if your theory is true, then it should apply to all airguns, not just the Condor. Look at the olympic 10m rifles and pistols. Big difference in barrel length, small difference in velocity, same tac driving accuracy.

Not trying to take anything away from people that want to distill everything down to a mathematical model but changing bore size as part of barrel harmonics ??? I enjoy shooting because it’s both science and art, particularly the art part because I don’t have to understand all the nitty gritty of everything. 😉

On the other hand, anyone wanna trade a 12 inch. .22 barrel for a 24 inch. one ?

My personal feeling on the matter is barrel length and penis length are inversely proportional. So the longer the barrel of the gun the shorter the penis. That is why real men shoot a Talon SS… 😯

Here is an experimental research that explains POI shift due to barrel time:
