The Gun: Talon SS, stock hammer, hammer spring and SS valve, Fully baffled, tophat set at .045, 12″ .22 barrel 3045psi fill.

My Goal: tons of consistant shots at around 500 fps. I shoot a lot of cans and paper so plinking is the order of the day for me. I do some hunting but right now 99% plinking. The CO2 mod would be PERFECT for me but I’m working with what I have on hand right now.

“Tophat shim” I wanted to adjust the tophat down further than .045 but it wouldn’t tighten any futher so I took a regular index card and cut it into a washer shape that would slide in between the tophat and the brass valve body. This took up the space as if I were able to tighten the tophat down more. I tried 1, 2 and 3 thicknesses of the cards as well as trying different power wheel settings to see how it effected the shooting as well as different pellets.

In place of the paper shims I bought some #10 washers and will put one behind the tophat and adjust the tophat from there.

I havn’t done the hammer slap mod yet either so I’ll be puting a 1″ foam and felt chair leg pad on the hammer to quiet it down as well as help with any valve/hammer bounce that might be causing some of the fps jumps. In the past this has dropped my fps by around 50 but I’ll chrony it and post the results.

I was amazed I was getting 10’ish fpe with 3 shims as the tophat could BARELY move, I don’t think I could have fit a 4th shim in there. How thick is a note card? .010? that is about all the tophat was able to move!

Not impressed by some of the odd jumps in fps on some of the shots and would like to get rid of ALL odd jumps in velocity. I’ll experiment some more this week and see what helps and what doesn’t.

I also brought some lighter valve springs with me and I might put one of those in and see what effect it has on my setup also.

CROW MAGNUM NOTE: they were hitting the target SIDEWAYS 😯 at 35 yards!!!! and they still somehow grouped 1.5″ right at the point of aim! very wierd.

WADCUTTER NOTE: 750-850’ish fps sent them LOOPING to the target very erratic accuracy in maybe 10-12″ group? only a couple hit the target at these speeds. 500’ish fps were grouping 1.5-3+” groups

Eun Jin/JSB Predator: VERY consistant fps as well as matching JSB Predator accuracy at 1″ @ 35 yards.

    Blackops,

I had a similiar goal for my Talon SS, which was to get more shots at a slightly lower velocity, but still enough for pest shooting. I ended up puting one rubber washer behind my tophat. It can be stretched over the tophat, and will not fall off. This resulted is 750 fps with 16 grain JSB Exacts for about 65 shots from a 200 bar fill. The fps spread is extremely stable at only a 3 or 4 fps variance between shots. I could probably get quite a few more shots without much of a POI change, but 65 shots seems to be plenty for a trip to the woods for me.

I wonder if the rubber sapcer might be better at creating more consistent shots? I would also suggest keeping the power wheel set at above about “6” for consistent shot speed.

    Good luck,
    Lorrin

Thanks for the heads up Leel! I will definitely give that a try as I have wondered about shims for a while but just hadn’t tried them yet till yesterday. I had never thought about using rubber but if your getting that kind of consistancy I’m all about it!

Makes sense to have the power up so you get a max hammer blow each time…I was getting some inconsistancy with the lower powers except with the Eun Jins, who knows why on those.

My Dad tried taking his extra hammer weight out of his Condor with Talon valve and his fps went all over the place! so a little more hammer weight might be worth looking into even with the Talon valve. Get a 100% consistant hammer blow and adjust the power with the valve opening.

    More to come…Jim.

Did some more shooting this morning after making a couple mods and getting some different pellets.

HAMMER SLAP MOD: Tried puting a thick felt and foam chairleg stock on pad thing on the Breech slide to get rid of the hammer slap and it sure did 😆 damn that thing was insanely quite…BUT…even on power wheel of 12 it wouldn’t even let air out of the tank from 3,045 PSI 🙁 so I took off the felt part with a knife and left the foam…it works pretty decent and good enough for now.

RUBBER SHIM: First 43 shots were with a rubber washer under the tophat…then I noticed the rubber washer was stretched on one side and was actually stuck on the side of the tophat! it was getting literally blown and stretched at the shot from the blow by at the valve stem 😯 I NEVER would have thought could do that but it sure did, after the 3rd time I saw it stretched out I went back to my notecard spacers…using 4 this time and adjusting the tophat till I hit my fps/fpe goal of just under 20fpe.

PELLET: Found another pellet at the local Sporting goods store…Benjamin 14.3 grain Diablo’s(look exactly like the Crosman Premiers I think)…WOW these shoot nice! definitely the most accurate pellet I have shot yet. Groups at 35 yards were 5/8’s – 1 1/8″ shot from prone w/bi-pod, laying on a mat, ZOS 10-40×60 scope on 40X, light(0-2mph) to med(3-5mph) wind

Starting PSI 3045, ENDING PSI 2,175

Roughly 130’ish shots at 19 fpe seems pretty good from a 12″ barrel and I’m starting to get some really good consistancy.

Hard to see but there is a rubber washer behind the Tophat.

Also hard to see but the felt/foam chairleg pad is visible on the back of the breech slide….had to cut this down as it absorbed too much energy to even let the gun fire! was really quite though 😆

This is where I’m shooting in Biloxi Mississippi, nice isn’t it 😆 Target is way in the back. A lot of land and stuff here but I’m here TDY for school so I had to find public hunting land to shoot on…this is actually a really nice spot since it’s paved and hunters aren’t real close but I heard literally several hundred shots in the 4 hours I was out shooting today 😯 I was kinda scared…

That’s the Combro Chronograph on the muzzle and a makeshift “anti-cant device” (string level rubber banded on the frame) which worked out REALLY well.

Just got this in yesterday it’s the new ZOS 10-40x60mm I’ll post some thoughts on it in the optics section…I think it looks frigging bad ass on here and it also came with a sun shade but I was worried about banging it as I carry the gun in a backpack to and from the field.

James have you considered a O-ring as a anit slap mod or as a spacer behind the tophat?? Seems maybe a 90 would be hard enough for a hanner slap mod and regular plumbimg o-rings from the hardware store for spacers??? Just a thought. maybe you could find a machineist who could add some extra threads to your stem to allow you to turn the tophat in as far as you wished?

still damn good numbers, just thinking of long term durability.

Hey Bod! how’s it going? I don’t have access to anything more than a few hand tools as I’m living out of a Hotel for school for a couple more weeks… when I get home in Jan I’ll be back on the wagon and crafting some better solutions 8)

Got some more shooting in today and was VERY educational as well as incredibly frustrating…my frustration was not completely warranted but my cramped back was puting me in a VERY pissy mood 😆

Gamo Squirrel is a TON of fun!!! Broke this guy out to see how it works.

First shot string, older valve w/steel valve body and the only change I made to it was to put in a very light valve spring and I was hoping for some great performance from this BUT what I found is this setup was MUCH less efficient on air usage, looks to use 18-29% MORE air to make the same power as the other valve with the strong factory valve spring.

Shoots frigging fantastic, very happy with this setup @ 12 or 20 fpe it shoots MANY consistant shots…stopped at 41 shots as my back just wouldn’t let me shoot any more today LOL 6 hours yesterday and 5 hours today was all it could take 😆 plus pumping the tanks up Friday and Saturday nights prolly didn’t help either as well as hitting back at the gym on Friday 😆 wonder why my back cramped up?

Black Ops, you’re one serious plinker. I like that. As to paper punching, welcome to my world. Due to physical restrictions most of the shooting that I do is sit down and wack(hopefully) small paper targets. I do this with air guns, rimfires, and center fires (6PPC,etc). One thing that I’ve noticed is the mind set difference in paper punching. There are a lot of similarities between all three of these groups.

I think for the most part, airgunners are quite happy to tinker around with their gun until they get consistent power and accuracy to hit their target (bird or beast) and make a clean kill. This is as it should be. Me included. When you move on from there to target shooting things can get complex. The devil is in the details.

At this point bullet weight, size, shape, and consistency from round to round make huge differences. Chamber shape, smoothness. and bullet fit and seating depth all start rearing their ugly heads.

If you wish to continue along these lines, be warned, the accuracy bug is totally incurable.but, if you wish I’d be happy to tell of some of my expliots and the results. Example: Talon S/S. 24″ barrel, Leupold scope, suma dis & suma dat, and thinking how to convert all of this to full benchrest mode.

How do you like that Chroni??? has anyone else used this “strap-on” 😆 chroni like compaired it to an alpha or other of the bigmanes?

… The idea of enjoying shooting during the test string has a ton of appeal!!!

Hey OPOC! oh yes please let me know what you’ve done that worked and didn’t… I LOVE to shoot mostly plinking cans, some paper and some hunting. My Dad is mostly a paper shooter but he has a bunch of squirrels and Opossums in his back yard that need a killin! He is making a serious attempt to making a Talon into a FT/Bench machine.

POI, Oh I LOVE the Combro it is incredibly handy being so small, does the FAC calculation for you and has worked basically flawlessly except when the sun could shine right directly into the sensors(VERY odd circumstance).

Only issue you will have is if your gun can’t mount it to the front IE a couple rifles and some pistols then the other Chrony becomes very handy…I don’t own anything the chrony won’t fit on though.

I would buy another one in a minute if it broke, Jim.

what happens shot 50 or so….power dropping alot but then stays consistently at that power…any ideas ?

the weak retrun springs, bad numbers might suggest that it is wasting air and tophat needs to be moved even closer towards the bottle (or fatter shim)

    but very interesting finds

with my first condor, it was stupidly curved power….like 500 fps and with each shot rising 30-50 fps until sonic s speeds and then down….totally useless

i tried with different tuff behind the tophat too….

really hard cardboard was ok, but crap on a rainy day
plastic washers worked ok, but eventually hammered flat
    copper washer hammered flat too
    iron/steel washer was best
oring would last about 30 shots and get beat to breaking point

i eventually found the sweet spot of the rifle which was about 35 fpe with jsb which it would shoot for 30 shots….and that was the best that rifle could do

James another thing i’ve done after instaling the lighter valve spring is get the tophat as close as possible. The next thing to experiment with is a lighter hammer. The valve mod i did was giving me good numbers and i still keep turning in the tophat as far as i could go which was .058. I was after power and conservation of air at the same time. Lighter spring= less travel needed, also my next thought was the lighter hammer. Somewhere on here awhile ago there was a post with some phenominal numbers and the guy had a old delrin 15gram hammer??? Have you also considered brass washers? Soft enough to sand on a sharpening stone to thin if necessary, but i have seen these and they are very thin, might complement the brass retaining top. After reading CygsX reply it makes sense that something harder would be more viable over the long haul. In a perfect world that stem would have threads quite a way down the length of it. But then they wouldn’t be able to market the micro 😆 Keep up the work i find it interesting as i’ve experimented in this dept as well.

Hey CygnusX I didn’t note it well enough, I turned the tophat in till I hit the 12 fpe mark after It dropped my 30fps limit. Wanted to do some shooting at 12 fpe and see how it did from there and my back started aching soo bad I tried the other tank then called it day when I was about to pass out 😯 I just looked at those 12 fpe #’s and realized just how danged consistant it was as well as how well it shot the Eun Jins @ 28 fpe…

Hey Bod, have a few things to try in the shim area and will be posting a buttload more info with all the dirty details 😉 I’ll be actually measuring the shims and tophat movement also instead of “1 notecard” 😆

I was just thinking about all the shooting and remembering the frigging backache I got from sitting/lying on the ground for 1-6 hours while shooting these strings 😆 OMG I was chugging Motrin and laying in my Motel bed typing the #’s and notes into the laptop…that’s is why these strings stopped where they did I have a nice comfy setup in the basement or garage for the future strings! I want to really push the envelope and shoot till she can’t shoot no more 😆 or at least be able to take a break without driving 30 minutes to shoot!

    Jim.
