Q:

Shot results-my new 24" bbl.

Well ,after losing my Mom Feb. 1,Today i did a little shooting with my Talon SS with a new 24″ bbl. I didn,t spend alot of time on shooting, but wanted to try bbl. out. It shoots dead on zero at 18 and 50 yd, i didn,t try it pass 50 yds, will do that this weekend.

What are your thoughts on results ,more tuning, do nothing, valve is modded, but that is the only mod to this rifle. Thanks,Paul and big thanks to Adam 😀 [

Hi Jim, I have been doing alot of shooting but not any adjusting. The Talon shoots so fine ,i have no need to try anything differant, sometime when i get bored i may do more testing ,but for now ,i,m into busting pine cones at 72 yds, like Adam does, lol. 😀

Rock On!!! Oh ya!…………..Glad the barrel is workin for ya!

Hey Paul, any more shooting? was looking through some old posts and was looking for more of your shot strings.

If your tophat won’t go below .062 and you want it too(limits valve travel and gives more consistant shots…NOTE maybe not in your case as you only shoot 10 shots) you’ll need to put some kind of shim behind your tophat…a metal washer keeps making my setscrews come loose, so I switched to a nylon washer and it is working perfect and the screws have not come loose again. I can turn the tophat to 0 if I want to or anything more than that.

Gotta love that pump! I do the same thing for my testing…wholly damn is it a good workout and HARD to aim after pumping the gun back up 😆

Jim.

When i got my new Talon SS from wife ,i simply took tank to work with me and filled it with 2,200 psi of nitrogen, then hand pumped to 3,000 psi. I only shoot 10 shots ,then hand pump back up. Up to 2,600 not bad at all after that,i use all my 218 body wt. lol.

Thanks to all for the nice comments, don,t know why i said it here anyway.

Tomorrow i will try a 20 shot string,i play with PW,the only pellet i use is Kodiaks, they are fine ,hard hitting pellets, the predators are used for close range hunting and are also accurate and deadly on squirrels, under 40 yds.

Bod,, My tophat will not adj. any tighter than .062,so to get less spread,i guess it is up the PW,does that sound rigt,or is there any other tricks.

How hard can you pump? I’ve heard it is some work to get to 3000psi and you do get to it. After that its a matter of topping off after 30/40 or so shots, so its not bad after the initial fill. If you do go this route Hills pumps are reputed to be the best and have a rebuild kit available should you ever blow out seals. Don’t skimp on your pump either, same as any fill tank. I really wish i’d had gone the steel route, because the 3000psi ali scuba is almost a waste, for a $100 more i could of had a 3500psi steel tank. The initail fill should be done in stages as the pump heats up with the friction and you’ll probably need a rest as well. But they do the job, i believe the hill pump is rated to 3200psi. Check Pyramid Air or Straight Shooters.

Do a search on “To pump or not to pump” This has been discussed before and that thread will answer more q’s then i can. Maybe help you in a final decision.

My Talon is a hunter,i only shoot 10 shots, then i hand pump back up.

i’ve wondered what it’s like using the hand pump… how long does it take to pump up the tank? Do you get it to 3000psi?

Sorry to have answered and left out your loss, i tend to scan the technical stuff and the personal stuff doesn’t even register sometimes. Glad your feeling up to some shooting, it does help relax a guy especially when everything is shooting well.

When you feel up to it again take your pellet of choice and do a 20-25 shot string. The first 10 shots can be erratic sometimes and from 10-20 seem to settle down to a more consistent string. Its not a bad string at all little over 2fps loss per shot, i try for 1fps per shot loss, never get it. But have gotten it to just under 2fps loss per shot.

I know what you are going through It get easier after a while. I at times, try to pick up the phone to call home. Just fo rafleeting minute I forget.

What kind of longer range accuracy do you get with the pred’s?

MIke

Hey Paul,

I too am sorry for the loss of your Mom. I offer my sincere condolences.

Dirty Harry

Sorry about you mom, Paul. Always seems like a part of you dies with them.

Thanks Jim,for the nice comment.

My Talon is a hunter,i only shoot 10 shots, then i hand pump back up.I do shoot at random targets alot ,just too keep trajectory in my head, but only 10 shots per string. So, my bottom line is ,those first 5 or 6 power shots for clean quick kills. This weekend i will play with PW,and see what i come up with. Many thanks ,Paul

Paulj, really sorry to hear about your loss, my heart goes out to you and your family.

Looks like it is shooting pretty danged good! how do you usually shoot your gun? a few shots hunting or a lot of shots target shooting? I shoot a lot and have gotten mine to start off shooting slightly low and then working up to max and then slowly shooting slower. At near max power I don’t know how many shots that would be with your setup though? I’m sure one of the guys on here has worked out a couple setups like yours?

Crow call is a nice touch 😀

Jim.

Play with the PW a little and see if you can tighten them up a bit. You’ll end up with more shots per fill, and more consistent shot to shot string. The tophat adjustment seems about right can you turn that in another 1/4 turn? The numbers are about right and your right where you want to be for shooting Kodiaks.
