Q:

Rws 350mag, breaking springs?

I bought a new rws 350mag in .22 some months ago. I shot it quite a bit, but noticed that the performance was decreasing. Penetration was off, pattern shifted, looked as though power was way way down.. Took it in to the dealer I got it from, and it was shipped back to rws..

They replaced the spring, free of charge, save shipping (40$)…
Been shooting for about a month and switched from the old crossman hyper velocity light jobs, to some 14.3 grain beemans.

Shot groups went back to pellet on pellet at 20 yeards or so, not too shabby, but lately Ive noticed that same behavior. Power seems off, groups started falling lower, and more irratic.

Did the telephone book test, and it penetrated about 1/2 an inch into it, where as before it would sale on through no problem. Shot a 3 inch paraphin candle and it barely sunk the entire tail of the pellet flush.

Thinking the spring broke again.
This gun is shot exclusively by myself. It has never been dry fired. Whats the deal with these springs? Is it a fluke that they keep breaking? If that is infact what is wrong, which it seems like?

I bought this gun for back yard plinking, and some pest removal, but Im not willing to use it for the latter until I know for a fact that it is a one shot deal.

So… Ive been eyeing the talon ss/ condor’s on the airgun seller sights and stumbled upon this place.
I was kind of shocked at the inital cost of a talon/condor..
Reliability wise, I was hoping for better than my current main springer.

I am not saying RWS is bad, I bougt it because their known for quality. I just think I hit a bad batch of springs, or Im shooting way too light of a pellet, either way.. I want consistant shot groups.

Anyway, Im Dan..
My hobbies are diverse.

Spy,

Take a read through the quick reference section. There is a lot there to learn and many mods available

Sounds like the CO2 Talonss would be a good starting point for you (quiet, tons of shots, easily 1″ accurate to 50 yds). The best thing about these guns is versatility. I started with an SS in .177 (i’d start with .22 using 20/20 hindsight) any time later, a 24″ barrel, shroud, hammer, condor tank and you have the whole deal. My current setup is a .25 TalonTunes Barrel and Condor tank and it will VERY CONSISTENTLY hammer holes in a 2″ brass christmas bell at 100yds presuming I do my part and wind is minimal. Easy to spend $12-1500 on one of these setups but it CAN be done in steps “affordably”.

TalonSS w/ co2 – 430.00
add longer bbl 150-180
add HPA 180
pump 200
or
bulk fill tank 3-500

Even the cheapest version of the SS is upgradable at any time to suit whatever purpose you have in mind and provides an accurate, cost effective entry point into this dark (addictive) world of adult airguns. 😈 😈 😈

I do enjoy it. My property isnt too big, and the max range I can shoot from front to back is maybe 150′ or so. That will change in time.
I will have to research the tuning aspect of springers. I really never gave that a second thought until reading this forum. I would assume that these aftermarket parts are available that tuners use, deburing, polishing, lubing so on and so forth sound like tasks I could accomplish.

Diving into the TalonSS vs the Condor, Im sure there are threads around here. I’ll start looking. Looks like the Talon is a proven performer, and the Condor may of had some issues early on?

I would prefer something that didnt sound like a .22 rimfire cracking off when dealing with my pest problem. I do shoot on my buddies farm, and ranges nearing 50-100yards, but my past guns have been so inconsistant that I never really got the enjoyment out of shooting those distances, with my current rig.

All that being said, when the time comes, I can go either way, a talon ss or a condor.

Which to folks here prefer?
For short, medium and long range shooting, pest removal and pellet on pellet performance?

Sounds like too light pellets, or cheap/undersized pellets. I have had several tins of crossmans which about 1in5 were undersized/excessively easy to seat in the barrel. Spring guns depend on firm pellet fit to develop back pressure which cushions the spring piston otherwise you get the same effect as dry firing.

If you like the RWS, I’d say send it off to a tuner for a good tune / aftermarket spring. It will shoot much smoother and accuracy/reliability will be better.

I tried two different spring guns before I choked $$$ and got my talonss – got rid of both my spring guns and have never looked back!!. Accuracy is almost scary compared to my previous expectations for pellet guns.

If your shooting distance is only 20-30 yds, you could step into the talon setup with co2 and not have the expense of pump/scuba tank, etc and can easily upgrade to high pressure later if need (want) arises. AMAZON.COM has a great return policy if you are unsure. You could get one and use it a couple weeks if not happy box it up and they’ll send you a return label even pay shipping!

Good luck.
