Q:

Power Wheel vs Top Hat vs Shims?

Hi everyone,

I just got my condor this last week and I need to get tuning on it. I’m going to be buying a chrony here soon (after my tri-base rail comes, scope is too low) and start adjusting stuff. I’ve read pretty much all the posts here but its still not clear to me what the different adjustments “do”. I know they affect speed, but what do they “do”? I’ve read some posts saying watch out on changing the top hat on the condor, etc.

Ideally I want to have my condor setup for 100 yard shots with Kodiaks.

I understand the ~1000fps due to the speed of sound.

So, my question as a newbie is, what does the power wheel do? What does adjusting the top hat do? What does shimming the top hat do? What advantages over each option are there? Is there something I shouldnt do? Looks like alot of guys set their power wheel at 10 and adjust the top hat from there. Why not just adjust the power wheel to the right speed?

Sorry for the big ball of questions, I just hate to get a new toy and muck it up the first week I have it and have to wait 2 weeks to play with it again.

I know theres alot of guys here that have way more time on their hands that can give me a good starting point.

Thanks!

First set the tophat to .071 or near, this is a good rough estimate.
then get the PW set to where your spitting kodiaks at say 1000, 975fps to start.
Go back to the tophat and find where you loosing the least amount of FPS per shot. With my modded Talon valve it was 2fps per shot on avg. Which is good i think. My tophat was set below .070, with a condor valve it will probably be different. You might not even achieve a 2fps per loss, but you do want the least amount of loss per shot, get the numbers as close together as possible. A tin of pellets, a chrony and a few hours will tell you what you need to know.

I ask you to take two steps (maybe 5) back. Assuming a full fill, where do we set the P.W. when we set the top hat at .071? Does a smaller top hat number equal less air per shot? Is there a post that walks you through this in baby steps? Not taking for granted you already know this does that and moving/adjusting this does that? Condor/talon adjusting 101…..Edit WOK good advice, going there now.

Preload the hammer spring
Fine tune velocity and efficiency
Decrease velocity
Efficiency and power
PW is gross adjustment, Top hat fine adjustment

A look at the Quick Reference section and reading posts in the General, Talon and Condor section will give more detailed answers.

Have fun! and Welcom 😀
