Pellet selection for springers… and misc ramblings
Given that the topic of springers is near and dear to my heart, I thought I would show a rather normal occurrence with springers. We have all heard how they can be pellet picky, but just how pellet picky can they be?
A number of things can cause a springer to prefer a certain pellet and some guns of even the same make and model prefer different pellets. A tune, change of weight (smaller or larger scope), or even break in can all cause a springer to favor one pellet over another.
Below is two 3 shot groups. I only used three shots just to show a point (that and I didnt want to mess up such a pretty group!). I first shot my R1 in .22 caliber using JSB Exacts. The group was at 50 yards and was far to the right, scattered, and down a bit. I then shot three shots using Beeman FTS pellets and produced the other group. Same POA, very different POI.
I used up the other targets shooting some guns that I’ve either not shot in a while, or just wanted to verify POI. First up was the DAQ. 3 shots at 50 yards produced a nice (large) ragged hole using 187gr round balls.
Next I tried my HW97LK in .22 and my BigEd B51 in .177. The HW normally prefers FTS or RWS HP pellets, but did ok using Exacts this time. Perhaps it’s breaking in a bit.
I got my Patriot in .22 out next. This gun is gas rammed and normally does very well for me. This is not one of my better groups, but for a magnum springer, I cannot complain.
Next up was the S400ERBSL. For whatever reason, this gun was off for me today. Certainly hunting accurate, but nothing to write home about…
