Q:

OK SCUBA TANK QUESTIONS

So I have been looking for a Scuba Tank and I didn’t know it would be so hard to find a used one but i have some quick questions to better understand what I should be buying.
80c 3000psi – 199.99
80c 3442psi – 249.99
100 3400psi – 349.99
I have seen these and I don’t which one I should get. I guess my question is can anyone with any of these tanks tell me the fills they get out os these tanks to their Talon SS?
-just found one that is a used steel 95c 3000psi is this good (they only want $75)

I peronsally don’t have much difficulty with the whole volume and pressure filling thing at all, it’s all the different fittings, hoses, what works with what etc that has me going “huh? What’s that?”

Tanks are made and sold for a ‘purpose’ that dictates the fitting styles, tank pressures etc.
When we want to keep these tanks in circulation it takes a hose and bleed valve that will attach to the tank of choice. Then we need adapters and fittings to marry up to the gun/bottle we wish to fill.

So a 3000psi SCUBA tank has a fitting requirement different than a 4500psi SCBA tank. The valves on the tanks are different and so need fitting to mate to that valve.
When you go after hoses and fitting it is important you abide by the pressure ratings and buy quality goods. These are readily availalble from reputable dealers that know airguns and airgunners.
Good luck and happy shooting

Here is the Airhog.com tank fill calculator

Play with it a bit and it may help you make your decision.

Jim, lots of info there and makes a case for setting up a gun for low pressure fills for sure.

➡ Hope this helps some understand how the refills work with the different kinds of tanks out there?

For these examples the SCUBA tank(3,000psi) is the gallon jug of water and the 20 oz. cup is the Talon/Condor tank.

FILL Talon/Condor Tank to MAX each time Example #1:

You can kinda imagine the air like a gallon jug of water and say a tall 20 oz cup(same height as the gallon jug). Now the trick is you can’t fill the cup to a higher level than the Gallon jug has water in it OK.

1. First time you fill the cup it takes a good amount of water out of the jug and your able to fill the cup ALMOST all the way to the top say within 1/2″ of the top, you notice the gallon jug is also 1/2″ from the top.
–you drink 1/2 the glass…
2. You refill the cup again but it only took a little out of the jug but the cup is not quite as full as the first time and now it is 1″ from the top of the cup but the gallon jug is also 1″ from the top.
–you drink only a little out of the cup say 1/4 of it…
3. You refill the cup again and it is a little less again say 1 1/4″ from the top and so is the gallon of water.
–you drink the WHOLE glass of water…
4. You refill it from empty taking a lot of water from the jug and say the glass is now 2″ inches from the top and the water level is even with the gallon jug.

….this repeats until there is so little water in the cup refilling it seems pointless(say 1/2 the glass) and you go get the gallon jug refilled…say this is 30 times…You never actually get the cup full(3,000psi) even from the first time filling it, very close but not full OK.

In your Talon Condor Tank it looks something like this:
Fill from empty 2,900psi max you can get SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,850psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,800psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,750psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,7000psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,650psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,600psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,550psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way….

Fill Talon/Condor tank only partially full(say 2,500psi) each time Example #2:

You can kinda imagine the air like a gallon jug of water and say a 20 oz cup(shorter than the gallon jug). Now the trick is you can’t fill the cup to a higher level than the Gallon jug has water in it OK.

1. First time you fill the cup it takes a good amount of water out of the jug and your able to fill the cup ALL the way to the top even thought the gallon jug lost 1/2″ from the top of it OK.
–you drink 1/2 the glass…
2. You refill the cup again but it only took a little out of the jug but your still able to fill the glass ALL the way to the top even though now the gallon jug is down 1″ it is still higher than the top of the cup.
–you drink only a little out of the cup say 1/4 of it…
3. You refill the cup again but it only took a little out of the jug but your still able to fill the glass ALL the way to the top even though now the gallon jug is down 1 1/2″ it is still higher than the top of the cup.
–you drink the WHOLE glass of water…
4. You refill the cup again and it takes a lot out of the gallon jug BUT the water in the jug is still higher than the top of the cup and you are still able to fill the cup ALL the way up…however you now notice the water in the jug is even with the glass and now you know each time you fill the glass it is going to be a little lower than the last time.

….this repeats until there is so little water in the cup refilling it seems pointless(say 1/2 the glass) and you go get the gallon jug refilled…say this is 50 times…BUT you notice you got around 10 full fills before you started getting a little less with each fill.

In your Talon Condor Tank it looks something like this:
Fill from empty to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi this time the SCUBA valve is open all the way and this is the max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,450psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,400psi max you can fill SCUBA valve is open all the way….

4,500psi tank For this example imagine the cups staying the same height BUT the Gallon jug of water is actually a 3 gallon jug and it is 3 times as tall as the original gallon jug!

In Example #1 IE full fills/full cups of water your going to be able to fill that glass from empty COMPLETLY full not only from fill #1 BUT also for the next 30 fills before you notice each one is a little less than the top of the cup…in the end you get say 90 fills before you decide it is pointless and go get the jug refilled.

In your Talon Condor Tank it looks something like this:
Fill from empty to 3,000psi you close the valve at 3,000psi even though there is more pressure in the tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 3,000psi you close the valve at 3,000 even though there is more pressure in the tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 3,000psi you close the valve at 3,000psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
…..repeat this MANY times(say 30 times!!!)…..before….
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,950psi this time the valve is open all the way and this is the max you can fill. The valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,900psi max you can fill valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,850psi max you can fill valve is open all the way….

In Example #2 IE partial fills your going to be able to fill that glass from empty completely full as before BUT your going to be able to fill it completely full say 50 times and then another 100 times (150 partial and full fills total) before you decide it is pointless and go get the jug refilled.

In your Talon Condor Tank it looks something like this:
Fill from empty to 3,000psi you close the valve at 3,000psi even though there is more pressure in the tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the tank
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi you close the valve at 2,500psi even though there is more pressure in the SCUBA tank
…..repeat this MANY, MANY times(say 50 times!!!!!!)…..before….
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,500psi this time the valve is open all the way and this is the max you can fill. The valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,450psi max you can fill valve is open all the way.
shoot to 1,500psi and fill to 2,4000psi max you can fill valve is open all the way….

As you can see they are both useful just in different ways…nothing is wrong or useless with either but one is just more/potentiall more useful than the others at the cost of 2 to 3 times the price.

A side note is the 3,000 psi tank you can’t accidentially overfill the tank where as the 4,500psi tank you need to be REALLY careful not to overfill the tank.

Your first fill is going to be your biggest. Shoot some and go get the scuba filled again. Shoot your gun 40 times and fill again. Never shoot your talon tank dry. You can simply top off your talon tank after every 40 shot on full power.

If you are just plinking on low power you can shoot a long time. I routinely fill my scuba when it goes down to 2000psi and that is a lot of shooting with the Talon.

I’m sorry but does this mean I will not be able to refill the TALON tank from the scuba tank now

All you can expect in the gun is ‘somewhat’ less than you have in storage
So if your new tank is now at 2600psi your next fill will be to say 2400psi
or if you are lucky 2500psi.
That is the sad reality of using a marginal tank to fill a gun that thrives on high pressure fills.
You may want to buy a Crosman Discovery to get good use from that 3000psi tank 🙂 (’tis what I would do….. oh right I built one 🙂 )

Ok I just got a used Tank 80cf 3000psi got it home and I filled my Talon SS Tank to 2600psifor its first fill. Question : Should I be able to get more fills out of my scuba tank now that I have filled my Talon SS Tank?

Thanks I don’t yet really understand how this works. 😀
