Q:

Nitrogen

Why is it that when my SS starts performing like the beaut it is I feel the need to tinker. Have ordered the Blodnob from Sean, can’t wait (but guess I will have to).

I remember reading something about using Nitrogen instead of Air, and getting a huge 4500psi mother of a tank to refill.
Can’t remember but how does nitro behave and what are the constaints ( before I blow my self up).

All in the quest for more shots and downhill umph.

Cheers
Dave

Even lower price. Nice link. Thanks.

Here is my reg. ,i use it on my nitro 400cu. at work ,3,000 psi rated, after it gets down near 2,000 ,then i use it for my Disco

You’re right, Rusty. The tank gage is there just because I want it there, I like knowing how much pressure I have left. Hadn’t thought about a restricted orifice, sounds like a good idea regardless.

Cyg, I haven’t actually kept track of number of fills, but figuring a 3K fill and refill at 2K, it calcs out to somewhere around 150 fills. Considering how long a tank lasts, I’d say that’s pretty close. Don’t know about fills from empty, but using the Airhog fill calc, empty to 3200 psi would be 34 fills. Here’s a link to that calculator if you’re interested: http://www.airhog.com/tank.htm
Later, all.

i could imagine a tank the size of the big welding tanks at 6000 psi would have ALOT of fills in it…..i have been filling from 4500 psi with no reg ….its easy…..6000 psi, with a very restricted middlepipe like
rustykfd said…im thinking ½mm hole or so and you might be able to get by with no reg at all…offcourse you gotta keep a close eye on it while filling, but that goes for a regular 4500 tank as well.

most rifles should take a accidental fill to 4500 psi without bursting…you might get valvelock…but survive…6000 psi might just do the trick for a failure….

Cyg, I have one of the large nitrogen tanks although its only rated to 2400 psi so I cant use it (. I wont lie, it is heavy, but not so heavy that one guy cant bear hug it and carry it around. Its super easy to tip and roll on its edge if your not rolling it across the nice tile floor.

If you folks do find a good regulator thats not crazy priced keep us informed please. I may end up just renting a tank and forget about using the reg. I have to finish my auto pump first just so I can say I built it. Just waiting on my mill table so I can make a few parts for it.

i pay 80 bucks for jan1 to dec 31, 2 fills a day allowed….just sucks i havent needed to get it filled until now….and it annoys me that americans cant do a 1 year subscription from the month you pay….

still pretty cheap…and i get 10% off everything in the store…not that i need it but nice none the less…guess i just gotta go pay and get a fill

i have been thinking of getting one of those 6000 psi N2 tanks, but i have no way of getting it in or out of the house by my self….nor do i have a truck to take it to the depot and getting exchanged….

wasnt there a link on here not too long ago to cheap military surplus compressors ? somethink like 1000 bucks for a complete 3500 psi setup ? of course they arent free to use either….gas, filters and spareparts it all adds up

you guys with N2 setups…how many fills do you get from a 4500 psi tank to a talon tank, if you fill it from 1500 to say 3200 psi everytime ?

how many empty fill would you get ? (i do alot of modding which forces me to fill from empty….)

Hey I see you guys have been busy… 🙂
Dave I like you set up but I think I would need a reg on my set up or I would be a nervous Reck. I will be calling another company that my fried says will give me better prices on the 4500psi tanks so I will post my findings tomorrow.

I can relate, believe me. My main reason for NOT getting a reg is simply bucks, high pressure regs are REALLY expensive. That said, here’s a link to one that I like, and may get someday, if the money ever falls out of the sky :-)! http://www.paintball-discounters.com/get_item_010558_hpa-fill-station.htm
I’m sure there are others, and I seem to recall some one saying they had a source for the standard 2 guage welding type reg for around $200, so maybe your friend can come up with something. Good luck.

Very nice and it will go in the Quick Reference section for sure. When you get your tank filled, do they pick it up or do you take it in?

Cool! Oxarc (my supplier) does deliver in my area, but so far I just return one and pick up another. With my luck, they’d deliver on Tuesday mornings, and I’d run out Tues. eve :-). Later.

Not to step on anyone’s toes, but sounds like lots of opinions and not much hands on experience :-). So here’s mine.

I’ve been feeding my Talon nitrogen since I got it last August. I rent a 443 cu. ft. 4500 psi industrial cylinder from a local gas/welding supplier. Gas costs about $60 and tank rents for $10/mo. As this is orchard country, this is readily available and alway in stock. I could get plain compressed air from the same source, but it would be special order and would cost about the same. That tank finally dropped below 3K psi in Feb. That was feeding my Talon (a LOT!), my brother’s Talon on several occasions, and a B50 that I recently traded off on another Talon SS w/ CO2 adapter. Added up to about $20/mo to shoot as much as I wanted. For perspective, filling scuba tanks would cost me $12 a fill, and a 100 mile round trip. And I’m just too damn lazy to pump that much :-)!

Shooting on N2 is no different than shooting on air. Air and nitrogen have very close to the same molecular weight and density. N2 is an inert gas, which for our purposes is a good thing. Non reactive, non corrosive, non flammable, it’s about as safe as a high pressure gas can be. One big advantage to the industrial cylinders over pumping is that the gas is practically bone dry. No possibility of corrosion, and I believe that water vapor has a braking effect on PCP’s.

Nuts and bolts time. This is a picture of my first fill station:

This worked really well with my first tank, I was able to feather the valve to fill just fine. Note there is NO regulator in my system. Dangerous? Perhaps, but no more so than filling from any other 4500 psi tank. How many guys do you know that have regs on their CF tanks?

So now I’m on cylinder number 2, and things have changed a bit. This valve isn’t nearly as accommodating as the first one was, so I had to modify my fill station. This is the current setup:

Still no reg, and it works just fine. Plus I can tell how much pressure I have left in my cylinder. The tanks I get have a CGA 680 valve on them, as you can tell from the first pic, I modified an old style AF scuba adapter to work.

As someone already pointed out, this is NOT a portable setup. The cylinder weighs somewhere around 200 pounds, and is a real bitch to get in and out of my truck. I need to modify my filler (again) so I can fill my 44 cu. ft. SCBA tank, but it hasn’t been a priority yet.

I guess that’s about it, if anyone has any more questions, fire away. Sorry I got so long winded! Later.

Dave

Which part, the oxygen part or the pointing and laughing part? 😛

I’ve heard that pure oxygen works really well.

I’m kidding, please don’t try this. Your gun will explode and you will die. We will all point and laugh.
