Q:

New 18" barrel = a WOW +

Just got the 18″ barrel in the mail this morning. Curiousity was killing me so I installed it and ran it accross the Chrony. The results were an instant 91 fps improvement.

The average for the 12″ barrel was shooting 21.1 Kodiaks at 737.1 fps. The 18″ barrel with same powerwheel setting and same tophat setting throws them an average of 828.8 fps.

Now I am off to the backyard to get it zero’d, but this first test has already got me to liking this thing.

So Rick, you get everything squared away? Hopin’ ya did.

Re tested without florecent lingts on in the shop. 990’s with 2900 psi. This was with the stem drilled to 1/8″ and the spring retainder fulll ported.

Mike

This isn’t fair I just got my 12″ .22 barrel and now all this talk is making me want to get a 18″ barrel.

You guy have that effect on people you know……. 😀 😀 😀 😀 GREAT SHOOTING ! Come to think of it I need to clean my Barrel..

Well you finally got it!!! Yea!!! If you have any simi chrome, or flitz polish, put a little on a patch and swab the bore. Follow by some FP-10 or clp. Then a few dry patches. Sounds like the bore was full or the typical preservative. Looks like the pellets are beginning to burnish, and clean it out.

I have the same 18 bbl, with a valve I modified myself. She looks like she is getting some high numbers. Over 1100. I need to shoot it without any florescent lights on in the shop to double check the numbers.

This is with Kodiaks!

Congrats!!! Mike

I agree, sounds like barrel is just “breaking in” I can’t say if mine did or did not have a problem as I knew most barrels have a ” break in period” and did not even shoot mine on paper except for about 8 shots to sight in until I had 3-400 pellets through it.

Enjoy your newfound power. (that fps gain should be good for about a mildot better trajectory at 50yd too!)

Looks like good shooting to me… who knows, maybe the barrel had a slight burr or something at the crown, doesn’t really matter I guess, if it gets better as you shoot, which does suggest the pellets may be removing/wearing away whatever it is that’s not supposed to be there. Mine shot great right away. I have yet to see if I can cover a group with a nickel at 30/35 yrds. tho.

No, it is all completely stock.

Do you have the air valve stem bored out to .125”? You pick up more fps with 18” runway.

Here’s some of the damage after finally getting her to behave. First group is a 6 shot group at 30 yds. Second group is a 4 shot group (all the pellets I had left…) at 50 yds. All from the opened tailgate of the truck and using the bipod.

Yep i’m the same way, I made myself go out this weekend and clean my powder burning rifles that I recently purchased. 1 to get them ready for the range and 2 so I wouldn’t shoot them dirty! One was pretty clean and the other was real bad… 😯

Still haven’t cleaned the Talon yet…. But i’m only a few hundred shot in… 😕 I have 3 barrels and i’ve only shot 2, too much fun to be had and not enough time!!! 👿

No, I meant to run a few patches through it when I unboxed it, but got in too big a hurry to go shoot and forgot to. I was kind of thinking maybe it had some crap in it and finally got it shot out when it started coming around. Yep, this thing is just pretty awesome with the added fps just those 6 inches alone gave it.

It’s like having a new rifle isn’t it!!! 😉

Did you clean the barrel before you started? It may have had some gunk or something that you got rid of after a few dozen shots…

I think back and wonder why it took so long for me to load up the 18″er into the SS, now that it is there it is tough to find a really good reason to remove it… 😈

stick an anthony shroud on there and should be in good business as well! 🙂

(although good luck getting a hold of anthony, he must be on vaca or something)

I’ve already got one of Anthony’s shrouds, best investment yet !!

Question now:
The first 50-60 shots grouped like shit. (I’m talking like a 2″ circle all around with none consistent.) After running those through it, from about 70 on to all I had with me, which was 125, accuracy finally came around.

My rest lacked alot, just was shooting across the opened tailgate of my truck with the bipod only, but 50 yd shots finally stayed inside a 1″ square, 30 yd shots could be covered with a nickel, so I am finally happy with that.

Would the new barrel make that difference in what I was seeing in the beginning?

Congrats Rick, you’re gonna love your gun even more now. A 90+ fps increase is about exactly what you should expect, and all without using anymore air than you did before… 😉 Keep us filled in on how it goes.
