Q:

Need advice on a scope

I’m paralyzed by the options, and I’m either at the point or rapidly approaching the point where Tony will have built my SS faster than I could decide on a scope. I need to make a decision.

Shooting will be 10-100 yards with the occasional long shot just to mix it up.

AO is required, and I really like side focus AO but could live without it.

Don’t think that I’ll need magnification above 16, although I’d be willing to go to 24ish. Prefer nothing higher than 4 at the bottom.

I have some short-range pest control, maybe just add a laser for the really short stuff?

Prefer 30mm tube, really prefer 34mm but money is an issue.

40mm objective is good, if I go out at night I’ll change to NV.

Reticle – mil dot is the obvious answer for resale, but I also like a simple illuminated target dot.

For mounting I’m thinking the BKL 4″ single piece cantilever on top of an AF tri-rail.

Budget – hard to say but I’m comfortable spending more than $500 and I get pretty uncomfortable around $1500.

You see my dilema? Got any thoughts other than that a guy with a grand that can’t pick a scope must be an idiot?

Thanks all, go knock down a rat for me
Jim

I don’t think that I’m confused about parallax vs focus, mostly as a result of the fine contributions of many folks right here at TAG. Of course I could be wrong.

I think of parallax adjustment as giving both close focusing and parallax adjustment. If I could get close focusing without parallax adjustment I’d probably be okay with that since you can deal with parallax with good technique but can’t do a thing about focus.

So, how out-of-focus is the Zeiss at 10 yards?

Jim

This is correct. However, many confuse paralex adjustment with focus. If youj can see thryu the center of the scope, it doesn’t matter if it has paralex adjustment or not. At least not for hunting. Oh, at 20 yards, with the paralex set at 30 uou might be off by a 1/32 of an inch. Now just how accurate do you need a hunting gun. And can you hold anywhere near that perfect off hand on an animal.

Mine is set at 100 yds, and I can still shoot under 1/4″ at 25 yds, well under 1’2 at 50, and 1 1/4- 1 1/2 at 100/.

The only thing you waont be able to do is get very sharp focus at 10-15 yds at high mag. If 9- 12x power is good on a 300 weatherby Mag. Why do we need 24x for a pellet gun?

The Zeiss Conquest only has parallax adjustment down to 30 yards, right?

The AF Scopes are really bad! A large objective lens will geve superior light gathering to a smaller one, only if it is ground from superior glass, and properly coated! A 30mm tube is a bit stronger, and in some brands has more adjustment range. It will transfer no more light! That is pruely a function of the optics. The 42oo is the best buy on the market right now. The Firefly recticle does a good job in low light. For the Money, the conquest Zeiss is the best out there!

Good points guys thanks. To be honest, it’s not even the optics that bother me with my SWAT 6X24X56, it’s plenty clear enough for me, all I really want is a scope that should do one fundamental thing in my book, simply HOLD ZERO. I also like the looks of larger ‘tactical’ style scopes on what looks like a tactical style gun, it just fits aesthetically to me, for right or wrong. That Bushnell 6500 really does look like the shit, but kills my wallet. I noticed AOA is now selling these, and it seems many here like them, with most being under 500 bucks…

Could anyone inject some input about these MTC scopes?

the bushys are great at the price….

4200 is great….ig you really got money burning a hole in your pocket the new 6500 series should he thing to get…sidewheel….huge magnification range…and same quality as the 4200

what really amazed me with the 4200 6-24×40 was the weight…im used to rex and nikko scopes, and they are way more heavy….pleasently surpriced by the bushy…

3200 series is 95% of what the 4200…just for less money

and the ultimate bargain….the 5-15×40 legend….it is freaking awesome at 160 $ and is 90% of what the 3200 and 4200 is….

I hate to say it. Especiall since Millett has put down chinese scopes so much in their advertising, But they are also just another chinese Scope! Better than some. But not great! You will still get the bath water optics at anything aproaching high power. Why not go to a good scope. The lower cost Bushnell 3200 will more than out perform it at a lower cost. For a little more, the 4200 is very good. Go the the scope discussion pages on swaf. Look at tbone reviews, and scope reviews.

The opticzone.com has very good prices. Swaf has a sale, although not listed on the 3×9 4200 elite. Don’t get cought up in the power race. Lousy picture at 16x is nowhere as good as sharp opotics at 9x.

That seems like good advice. How about some more? Two questions 1. How is the quality of the A.F. 4x16x50 scope? 2. What do others suggest in the price range of the A.F. scope? From the little bit I know (or think i know) I want a 30mm tube and as big an objective as poss. more than willing to give up some magnification to get max. light transmission.

I’m highly suspecting my Leapers just can’t hold zero properly, I shouldn’t have to make the adjustments I do during a target shooting session in 60ft backyard. The windage knob doesn’t even have any clicks anymore, just a mushy turn, can’t be right. I’m thinking of upgrading a bit, but don’t have the kind of bucks for the higher end stuff. I may give this Millett a try, I’ve read quite a few good reports on it…

I don’t shoot match, so an ao just isn’t all that necessary for me. I just switched from a cheap bushi with AO for a Zeiss Conquest without. A Bushi 4200 with firefly would have been my second choice. Followed by 30 mm Meoptic. Swarofski A line third only because it doesn’t offer much more than the Zeiss Conquest. But does cost almost double.

cost no object. Kahles, Schmit-Binder.

Here is some very good info on scopes!

The bushie is a go to scope in that price range, if i had the budget i’d get one that covered all my bases. But then i could buy two 😆 really nice scopes. Here is my thought anyways, the Nikko Stirling 10-50×60 a top choice for pin point accuracy at distance, has all anyone could ask for in a ag scope. Another brand which has caught my eye is the MTC Viper line of scopes also has all you could ask for plus a very accurate mil-dot recticle.

It isn’t “low budget” it’s just what I’m okay with, this is different for everyone. I have been fortunate, but I have also been working for far more years than some of you.

I’ve looked at Swarovski, but like all of the vendors they don’t do a great job with the specs that I care about for an airgun.

The Bushnell/Donkey show combination is probably a winner, even without the show.

Jim

your “low budget” number would be my dream scope I cant justify.

Either you are a lucky SOB or I need a better job.

How about this one?

Should put you in the same comfort zone I’d be in buying a scope for $600+ 😈 😀

Buy a Bushnell Elite of your choice and use the rest here you lucky Bastard…LOL
