Q:

My new lathe

I just bought a new lathe that was being advertised on the Yellow Forum. Here’s what it is… http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=82710

It comes with a bunch of extras including a milling attachment.
It should take care of most of my smaller needs. For the big jobs, I still have old faithful here.

Martin would you be able to make any suggestions or help me out on making a DRO for my mill?

I’m talking bare bones DRO’s here. I bought some cheap ($15 ea.)4″ calipers and
thought of doing something like this–>

For the more ambitious and enterprising types that want to
know EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW about DRO’s, interfacing,
and software then here is the skinny–>

Oh, Im not dissing your machine Nuglor ). Its just what Ive heard on that type of DRO. You just gotta remember to keep track of the play in the handle. Unless Im the only one with a tiny bit of play in the screws.

On that note. That new X3 mill table has a really slick way of taking all the play out of the screw. Im really considering doing that mod to my lathe. I will post some picks of what Im talking about if I take it back apart or find a shot of it somewhere else.

Wow Walter, your shop is huge. Great looking machines too.

If your looking for a cheap DRO I found this on Ebay

Looking at your machines you would need longer scales but you can talk to that seller and upgrade. It will just raise the price.

I also found this kit you can build yourself that uses the cheapo scales as well.

Ive heard bad things about the DRO’s on Nuglors new mini. Because they reference off of the screw they are subject to any play that the screw has.

One thing worth learning now you fellas have a lathe is making tooling from drill-rod. Very handy stuff for making boring bars, threading tools, reamers, pins etc. With a good torch and some oil hardening drillrod any specialty tool is within reach.
Very nice lathe you got there Nuglor, well done.
Martin would you be able to make any suggestions or help me out on making a DRO for my mill?
Cheers,
make chips!!!!!
Walter….

Nice little mini. I like that bigger one you have better though ).

Speaking of HSS tool bits. Where do you guys get yours from? What about specialty bits like for cutting Oring grooves on the inside of a tube? I keep thinking Im going to have to grind some myself.

GOOD SHOW!
That’s the SAME one I have minus the DRO’s (I have the stuff to make some).
You’ll love the quick change tool post.
The coolest mod. I did on mine was to lap all the ways/gibs-1 FULL day!
Made it MUCH more rigid and accurate!

I also snagged a 5″ 4-jaw independent chuck.
You can do more easy mods on this machine than an AF rifle!
Variable speed/rev. motor/hi-low select/reversable lead screw/tacho only comes with the 7 x 14.
I like the plastic gears (only the spindle gears are steel). They are quieter and will break/shear if you screw up like me–I auto-fed the carriage into the end of the bed. Gear=$4.95.
The ONLY complaint I have is the cost of HSS cutting tools.
I tried grinding my own but that is WAY above and beyond the call of duty! 😯
You did way good!—

Nice score, looks like a great setup, cheap too 😀

You got a great deal. I saw that you got that. That model even comes with metal gears instead of the plastic ones. It also have a Quick release for the tail stock.

Very good buy. I think he underestimated what he put into it.
