Q:

My new 850 airmag

I don’t know what the hell I was thinking. I did not show you guys my new toy. It’s an RWS Hammerli 850 AirMagnum in .22. It’s my first .22 rifle with bulk 9oz Co2 tank, Bushy Banner 6-24×40 and a Rich from Mich. MB. I also added alittle weight to the stock with spray foam and two 6″ bolts just to keep it more balanced and it’s at 8.95lbs with all you see. The gun puts out 13fpe but with the hammer spring mod. it will do 16fpe and it loves Beeman FTS and cleaned an lubed CP’s. The trigger is not great , but not bad. The trigger is set at 2lbs-4oz on my Lyman. Lots of buzz going on about the 850 so this is mine.

Pat J.

Some groups shots at 25 yards. man this gun I like from the price

I have the balance set nice for me. and it shots very good offhand.

I converted my 850 to HPA and it’s reaaly working out great.
Well it looks like the guns shooting right at 740fps and with the Beeman FTS is was 745fps. I had to remove the gauge and the fill nipple to get the holes lined up for Modding the stock and I had some small problems with leaks after that but it was due to me not doing it right. The regulator is set for 1200psi and the fill press. is 3000psi so after getting things back together it looks like the LDC is to long. The LDC is touching alittle so I’ll need to sort that out. After 72 shots the fill press. was just above 2000psi and thats not bad for a 22ci tank. Also keep in mind that this gun has the spring Mod. with no spacer. I will put together a shot string later to see when refill is needed. This a fun gun to work on and shoot and I truly enjoyed it.

850 on HPA

Gauge setup

First victim at 17+fpe (looks like a blow through)

I was able to shoot some Chrony # with the HPA setup and groups shots as well with Beeman Trophy pellets at 14.0gr. It seems that the 1/2″ flires are not due to the Reg. on the tank with the off shots at almost the same FPS as the good ones. Also keep in mind that the barrel is 5″ from the chrony due to the LDC and I stopped at 96 shots with 1900psi in the tank. This test was done in strings of 32 shots and after loading 4 mags. the first shot was high? check out #33,65,90 are all much higher? and on shot #89 the tank press. was at 1900psi but the gun was still hitting right at the POA. Not bad for a 17+fpe gun. I think the tank can be shot down to 1500psi before refill and that’s around 128 or more shots from the 22ci tank.

I order some Beeman trophy’s and Pyramid sent me Kodiak’s Well after sorting this out on the phone with them They said I can keep the pellets and they will send the right order (Pyramid ROCKS. So I was thinking lets try them in the 850 and at an Avg. of 646.6fps and a HI of 657.5 I was very surprised That’s 19.50fpe on an Avg. and a max of 20.16fpe with a 21.0gr pellet on 1200psi regulated air. Can it be that this regulator is breaking in? Or is the Kodiak’s just sealing better in the barrel? Well after testing with the Chrony I was thinking lets see how she does on paper.

The Kodiaks load OK in the 850 mag if you keep the gun flat on a rest. It was pretty winds in my area but this one is at 25 yards. I thinking maybe the Kodiak Match pellets will do better or if I just weigh and sort some, the groups will become tighter, but I’m getting reports that they are catching when loading and they are clipping some. I sure like the power with the Kodiak’s, I will see what can be done to make them better.

850 Chrony shots in the sun

I tried testing the 850 .22 by moving my shooting station in the sun. I also setup a thermometer on the rest to keep track of the temp. All shots are at the muzzle with 20 seconds between shots. This should be a good indication for how the gun will perform in the summer with the 9oz tank on it.

Lubed Crosman Premiers 14.3gr temp. was at 88 degrees F on the last shot.

After spring mod

Before spring mod

I did this at 25yards standing, that’s 8 shots with 15sec between shots. The gun is sweet to shoot but I fear this will be the only Turkey I can shoot this year. We will see next year. 😀

8 shots

I added the 850 hammer spring Mod and the two spring Mods. that are available from Rich from Mich. that I have show that the small space spring on the right is a better fit for the stock valve. The wider space spring seemed to pre-load in the gun and it has compressed by 1/4″ thus producing less power than the stock factory spring. The spring on the right is putting out 676fps Avg with lubed Croman Premier’s at 65 degrees F with a high of 679pfs and this should go up with higher temps (all shots are in the shade). The gun should put out over 16fpe in the spring/summer and the accuracy of my 850 is still good for now and the groups are from .344 to .500″ from 25 yards. With the stock spring the Lubed CP’s/Beeman FTS and Beeman Trophys are the best shooters. The CP’s are the best all around pellet due to price and performance. the stock spring is right around 2.447″ long and both Mod springs are a 1/4″ longer. After I removed the wider space spring on the left from the gun it’s only at 2.263″ long. I think the pre-loading on the left spring is done and with a 1/4″ spacer it may put the 850 at even higher power levels. I tried to find some washers in my stash of many ends & what nots with no luck, for the spring rod guide is too big.

I hope this helps for Info.:D

Thanks guys. Buba b, I know you can make 850 out of paper with you talent….LOL 😀 . some are running HPA on the 850 and I hear 18fpe and maybe up over 20fpe with bulk regulated tank and remote line. For the price lots can be done with the 850.

Nice gun would realy like one myself if it wasnt for the CO2 bottle ,but its too cold for it here 🙁 . Ive seen on the Russian forums their converting the 850 s to PCP which would solve that for me . Any chance of taking it apart 😯 and measuring all the bits so i can make a copy 😀 hehe happy shooting .. 😀

😀
Cool shroud, Photo. Yeah, I enjoy this plinker so much, I’ll never sell it, unless I move up North somewhere where co2 is not as efficient.

Vlady Thanks for the Info. 😀

Photo, the wrap works great. It’s a camo duct tape wraped several times around those holes. Really tight. So it works like an expansion chamber.
Silent.
Actually I switched to 2 piece mounts last week to get some weight off. It don’t need a one piece mount anyway, no recoil.
It is really cool to actually see a pellet arching toward a pigeon that is 40-50 y. out.

Cool rig

Thats alot of shots for one fill.
I am impressed with both groups. 25yards and the 50yard. Not bad for $200.
I am in the same boat as Yella. I have spent too much on airguns and shouldn’t buy anymore until I sell of some. 😥

Vlady, I like the way that’s setup. Hows the wrap on the MB? does it help? Some guys are using shrink wrap on the MB, and it seems to work good. I was going to use a one piece scope mount, but my goal was to keep the weight down on the rig as best I could and still get good balance with the 9oz C02 tank.

Here is mine at the bottom. Great plinker and pest control tool. 160 full power shots at 12fpe with 88 g. co2. I lost count how many pigeons were slaughtered…
Also, here are five 50 yards shots with one miss at the top.

Nice pics photo22. Now I can see why people called it a poor man’s Rapid (in the complimentary way). Congrats.

Yeah that’s it, a poor man Rapid 😆 …..lol
