Q:

Just a couple of questions!

Hi!
1/2 of my Talon arrived! It’s (just…) missing the air tank (it arrived to my dealer scratched from the factory and he sent it back for replacement).

So… let me ask you guys a few (newbie) questions!

1- The barrel arrived covered with some orange powder in some places… is it rust or just a “high tech” finish? 😀
How do you guys keep it from rusting? Since it’s a Talon and a part of the barrel is exposed, is it good to always keep it soaked with a thin layer of oil?

2- What products are good for this purpose (I read many of you like FP-10… since I’ll have to import it, it would be nice to buy the right stuff). I’m using a gun oil named Abbey Gun&Rifle oil my sister brought to me from the UK… is it good? Because it was really cheap and that’s all I got for now… 😳
I used some of this oil inside the barrel too… I guess there was some rust inside too. Used a soft nylon brush and cleanned the barrel with patches with this oil.

3- My tri-rail is a little twisted (tri-rail’s top rail isn’t completely flat). Is it normal or I may have bought “a fake” one? And it’s not aligned with the gun’s top rail… it’s dislocated about 2mm to 3mm (1/10″) to the right side. This isn’t really a problem since I’ll use adjustable rings…

I guess this is all the questions I got for the moment…
I read the forum every day and before asking these questions I used the search engine. Sorry if I missed some posts that may have answered my questions.

Thanks!
I’ll post some pics once it’s fully assembled (still waiting for sling, bipod…).

Hi!

I may have better uses to the butt you’re sending to me! 😀

My dealer received the air tank friday… I guess he will send it to me this week. Don’t worry, send it when you got the time.

Oh, if you can, please, send it by simple airmail or First Class… packages from the US are taking FOREVER to arrive… no point on sending by a more expensive way (like Global Priority… just don’t send it by surface, OK?).

l

I sure will

Crimson,

I will send out your WOKBUTT II on Tuesday….all the way to Brazil.

PM me your address again just to make sure I have it.

It is coming as an ornamental coat hanger…LOL

Hi Gary! Thanks for your answer!

Yeah, like you said, I believe it was surface rust… nothing serious.

Well, I removed all (or at least most) of it gently with a Dremel and a soft cotton polish tip with a little polish compound (really, just a bit). Then I cleanned the outside of the barrel with isopropyl alcohol (the first cleanning tissues were a bit orange). This barrel just got beautiful!!

After that I rubbed some Abbey oil on the barrel (except for the breech area… I used silicone grease). According to the oil’s instructions, it’s mixed with some “powerful rust inhibitor additive”.

Inside of the barrel I tried to do a quick cleanning… just pushed a cleanning rod (with a nylon brush) a few times and the brush came out with some orange powder… then I oiled it a little with patches and cleanned it with some more patches (I guess this Abbey oil is not that bad… it really removed the rust from the inside of the barrel). It’s temporary, I’m waiting for JB compound to arrive and I’ll use it with a phosphor bronze brush. And I’ll leave the bore like this for a long time and a lot of pellets throught it before cleanning it again.

I did the Q-tip test you described (that’s really nice, uh??? Thanks a lot for the (Q-) tip!!!!!!). I guess everything is fine…

I got all those questions because this is my firts long airgun… I used to live in a small house and all I could shoot was air pistols. Now I’m on a big house (well, not that big, but I got about 30m to shoot indoors). Air pistols are so easy to mantain and clean (if needed at all)…

Well, I’m sure I’ll enjoy the gun when the tank arrives! I’m already enjoying it and it’s not even shooting! 😛

Thanks a lot!

That is probably surface rust. Mine came that way also. Clean it off with a some fine steel wool and put a good rust preventative on it. I like Rust-Pruf (petroleum-based but great as a rust preventative) or EEZOX (synthetic-based, and maybe just as good a rust preventative, and certainly better in the bore, as it should not diesel). Be sure to keep petroleum based oils off the area of the barrel where the breech O-rings slide. I use a very light coat of Divers silicone below the aft bushing.

See also the post on cleaning barrels in the reference section. The interior of the bore is probably not rusted due to the shipping anti-corrosion stuff applied either at the factory or by Lothar, which needs to be gotten out, and a little bore polishing sure helped my gun. However if you do not have good rods, and a secure way to hold the barrel, let the polishing go, and merely get the bore good and clean (which you may have already acomplished) then put a VERY light but uniform coat of said rust preventative in the bore, as unprotected chrome-molly steel rusts very easily.

Inspect the bore, using the Q-tip method, and by looking through it at a light for rust or pits, (rust looks like dark non-reflective spots) when it is in a clean patched-dry state. If any rust shows up in the bore send the barrel back. Do this inspection first before you clean off the exterior rust as it would be evidence of rust in shipping, and strengthen your claim.
Good luck, and I bet you’ll love shooting your Talon when all the pieces come together.
Gary
