Q:

how to set up a new talon

just wondering what should be done to set up a new talon. i have read a lot about top hat adjustments, hammer springs etc. just got my talon back from air force -faulty safety- then i ended up back ordering scope mounts – everybody listed mounts but no one had any!! finally im ready to shoot. i mounted a 6x24x50 simmons praire master in bsa adjustable for windage and elevation mounts. hope to get the maximum number of shots – 850 to 900 fps / what would be the number of shots i could expect with a fill of 200 bar ? oh yea this is a .22. thanks — kingpin

Don’t forget your feeler gauges and a .5mm allen wrench for the tophat. A bunch O’pellets, start with the tophat around.070 and work down from there. My best string ever was with the tophat set at .067, all our rigs are different though.

thanks for the help. have to get out my chrony and play.— kingpin

KP, first you’ll need a chrony to find out where your at, as well as where the tophat needs to be adjusted to. A set of feeler gauges wil be a must as well for accurate measuring of tophat spacing. Don’t worry about hammer springs, the factory one is fine

As far as the safety goes, get used to it, they are junk. Although some guys still have theirs in and working, many opt to take theirs out. For me it was a matter of constant, hammer releases, causing misfires. Never rely on that safety as being safe. It has to be the worst safety in all airguns made. Never release it if someone is near by or downrange. Alot of owners have opted for removal of said safety. This way when the gun is cocked and loaded ready to take a shot, if we don’t take the shot we just push the brech forward, pull the trigger and control the hammer/ brech to its resting state. Its the safest safety one can have on this gun, as you’ve taken out the possibility of mechanical failure to a great degree. Lets hope AF got it right for you, don’t hold your breath though.

You should get 40 shots in the 900-800 range maybe down into the high 700fps range from shot 35-40. I usually am able to get a loss of around 2fps per shot when the tophat is set right.

Hey Kingpin, here is some “light” reading for ya 😆

Many hours of testing went into these and the numbers are a little less than what your looking for but some info…

You can shoot that Talon all day long….have at it. If you have a chrony you can then fine tune the powerwheel and tophat. If you dont have one might as well shoot the hell out of it until you get one 😀
