Q:

Help! best bell curve by 30 ft/lbs with 18,5" BSA barre

Hi,

After my illness it’s now the time to work on my old stealth.
Put new .22 BSA barrel in it of 47 cm. 18.5″
and want shoot JSB with 30 ft/lbs, say 275 m/sec. ( 900 ft/sec)
But what is the best tune to get a nice bell curve.
And keep the rifle silent, have a full workshop at home 😀
Like to work with a light hammer.
And have a “virgin” Stainless Steel valve house, with no holes in it,
so I can machine it like I want.
Get also a 32mm diameter lead dust collector on it,
length 30 cm say 12″.

My goal is 40 to 50 good shots. all help is welcome, links /toppics/ valve drawings.

Thanks Ewoodie.

Nice to be back, I get two time leukomia, and get now cells from my sister, and get a new bloodgroup also.

But now about the rifle, did read a’few’ postings, and opend the rifle and valve house again, put a flat valve in it, and polish the stem and put more force on the valve spring, did also turn te hammer down so it runs only on two rings, the hammer is white, so i can see the position of the hammer.

it shoot now 27,88 ft/lbs with JSB /air arms .22 and it’s very still.

Shot this evening 5 pellets in 17 mm, only no. six was a flyer. at 50 meters. not bad.

Yes i have still the DVD but some people get trouble to play it in the US
with the problem of the regio code.

Ask a freind of me to put something on you tube, there was also a lucky standing shot of a crow at 100 meters ( yes 104 yards ).

Now this is a blast from the past… Ewoodie

Glad to see you back! I didnt realize you were ill. Hope all is better now.

I still remember the old vids.. the head exploding on the pigeon and the ‘pigeon at 38 yards, on roof’… SNAP! tumble…. hahahah

I remember that video. Always wondered what happen to it.

E wood, welcome back. All of those who made the TOG are here. Just a different name but same people.

Glad to have you back. 😆

Hey Ewoodie –

Sorry to hear about your illness, but glad you back up and running !

Even happier to see you here, Jooleyen was asking abut your video’s on the other site (TOG), I gave him your information incase you still offered the vids for sale so he could get a copy.

Well to narrow things down maybe order a standard hammer spring, hammer and condors extra weight just in case its needed. I posted something on this a litttle while ago. There is a post from J3 magnum in the general area buried around 20pages or so and he had a 15g delrin hammer and everyting else was stock is my understanding. He got a awsome shot count and a nice bell curve as well. I guess i was responding in terms to a more or less stock setup. The way they are setup now is for full power on the first few shots. Want a little more power add a heavier hammer it holds the valve open longer. I know a curve is achieveable as the current hammer spring is maxed out at around 100g mine really seems to struggle to get the 100g hammer moving, 75g is about optimum and with a little lighter valve spring i get good numbers with the stock 50g hammer, slightly lighter valve spring and a modded Talon valve, so long as the tophat has been adjusted in so its not wasting air. Your right there is alot of variables. Hammer length and the preload on the spring with the Power Wheel setting also play a role. With what i mentioned above the PW just affected consistency from shot to shot after modding the valve, installing a lighter spring and going with a stock 50g hammer. I get about 100fps more over stock, and a shot spread of 42fps over 20shots. If i could have gotten the tophat in more then .058 i’d have been able to tighten the string up some more. One could say maybe a 40-45g hammer might have helped as well. This is the madness of it all, it sounds like you have a good handle on it, keep us posted..What valve design are you considering?

If your going completly custom not many of us can offer much assistance, it will have to be trial and error depending on your valve design. Brech bounce will depend on the hammers weight and the preload on the spring. I don’t buy into hammer/brech bounce to much. 1. your brech is locked against the tophat, and 2. the delrin is plastic which does a good job of absorbing the energy as i see it. Both the brech and the hammer cups are delrin. I have asked about different materials for brechs and how they transfer energy, but noone seems to know. I have a ali brech and wondered which of the two does a better job of transfering the hammers energy and dispersing it?? I know my TSS pretty well, if your going custom, thats a different ballpark altogether. Then we have a few guys who know what they are doing, 2 marks, Sean(Blodnob), CygsX, and another who posted a nice rig but doesn’t stop in to often. Have fun, enjoy your project.

Did read a toppic about the valvehousing, and open the bottle agian, think my valve spring is to weak, it close not so quick, and give a blast of air.

I think the High flow of air is very diffecult to understand, in a valve house, like spring force, valvehousing shape, valvestem shape, and more things to think, pellet fit / start force, hammer weight, hammer force, hammerspeed, hammer travel, breech o ring fit, and lube of the whole thing 😥 .

But that’s the fun 😀 to get a nice shooting rig, I have time but in May it must be in top shape, for a hunting trip to the UK.
😛

cu ewoodie.

A lighter hammer, balanced with the right valve spring will do you just fine. Its finding that balance which will be of some frustration, especially since your going to do a custom valve job. I’m going to experiment with this as well with a Talon valve, lighter valve spring and lighter hammer. Looking for a 50fps spread or so say starting at 800fps up to 850 then back down to 800 somethig along those lines.

Great to see you here ewoodie,

Working on about the same project! I’ll keep you posted!

Regards,

Marc
