Q:

Hello – New TalonSS

Hello – I’m a new guy. Just got a Talon SS a week ago. My first PCP.
Took me about 3 yrs. to talk myself into it.
Now I wish I wouldn’t have waited so long.
Anyway I’ve got some numbers here & would someone be kind enough
to let me know if I’ve got it setup to par.
It’s all stock except for the tophat which was set at .137 factory.
I turned it down to .070 – which was as far as it will go.
I’ve picked up a lot of info from here & want to say thanks to all
for freely sharing.

Pellet = JSB Exact 15.8 gr.
Power wheel set at 4

Start ~ 200 bar | End ~ 140 bar
To fill from 140 to 200 bar = 150 pumps (air force hand pump)

Thanks

Consistent shot count = more shots before fill so long as your not wasting air buy having the tophat out to far. If your getting numbers that close together your right where you should be. It used to be that you could screw in the tophat further than .070, are the newer talon tanks coming with less threads on the valvestem? I just worked on (modded) a valve and couldn’t adjust the tophat to the desired distance which ended up being .058, i cut some threads so i could accomplish this. Interesting to note that the tophat comes out to meet the brech, in a perfect world this would be the norm. Seems these guns are an entity unto themselves. They all like to be adjusted a little differently.

TJ, you numbers are really, really good no need to do a thing.

Lost sailor, when your adjusuting you can pretty much tell in 5-8 shots if your good or not. If you see a spread like what you have now turn her in and refill. Do this untill you start to see the first few shots tighten up. then you know your getting near. Start turning by a quarter turn in till you find that spot. I’ve had a diffrence in extreme spread in ten shots of 5.6-17.7 with the tophat at .067 for the 5.6 and .071 for the 17.7 ended up with the same exact avg fps and fpe only difference was a couple of eratic shots a quarter turn equals about .002. Have fun, it can be frustrating but in the end worth the trouble.

90% of the new rifles I see have the tophat out too far.

Good job TJ.

Mine was pretty close to TJBob’s @ 0.111″ and when I set it back to the recommended the cocking lever and breach would do a slight bounce with a rotation when fired, so I imagine they bring the top hat out to make the breach (or whatever that slidey thing is) meet tight with the top hat…

At 0.11″ I was losing 1000psi after 25 shots, now I can shoot about 50 shots and lose 1000psi.

I’m not sure the power changes but the number of shots before you need to refill will change with an incorrectly vs. a correctly set top hat.

I never really noticed any big change in fps by changing
tophat setting from .137 to .070.
I couldn’t set it any lower.
I’m pretty happy with it, think I’ll leave it alone now.

Kodiaks are going around 730 fps
CrowMags around 750 fps

As long as you are happy that is good. But on a complete fill 750fps with kodiaks is pretty standard. Maybe a little polish here and there and a little lube on the orings might pick it up a bit. 😀

That string sure has less scatter than my SS! I’ve shot a couple strings with CP’s, and the fps is higher, which makes sense with a lighter pellet, but the scatter is substantially more:

Pellet = CrosmanPremier 14.3 gr.

I think I may have to adjust my tophat as well, it’s also quite a bit more than 0.070″. Time to tune!

Thats pretty good for a stock gun. You can do a lot of damage with those numbers.

Thats a beautiful string you got there, very consistent. 150 pumps? Wow, Im glad I got the Hill pump. I think its harder to pump but it takes fewer strokes.
