Your pellet may be close to supersonic, or with small localized areas of supersonic flow. Do you oil your pellets. A little oil greatly enhances the effect. I see it sometimes too.

That’s it. It’s the water vapor condensating rapidly. Pretty cool huh? Called a vapor trail. Happens in guns too. You just need the right conditions.

Well darn, I thought you guys were going to explain an occurence seen with my .22 SS a few weeks ago when I was shooting. Here in central Texas, it is rarely humid, but on this one particular day, it was humid as hell. I was noticing after each shot I fired, there would be a good puff of smoke come out of the barrel and a small trail rise out of the barrel after the pellet was gone.

Thought it was pretty cool, but also was wandering if I was having some sort of troubles. Once the humidity lifted and since, I have not seen it anymore. Do you reckon this could have been caused by the humidity in the air?

Yeah yougot it, that’s how my buddy did it. 😀

quote Triggerman:

So what causes the smoke?

I’d be willing to bet the guy was blowing cigarette smoke through the breech end.

Just because it is real hot. 8)

So what causes the smoke?

Now that’s pretty cool. Love the hole smoking gun thing 😀
