Q:

Bushnell Stealthview 5×42 Digital Night Vision

I’ve been interested in Digital Night Vision ever since I got my first Sony camcorder with Night Shot several years and 4 camcorders ago. The technology still isnt as good as Gen 3 filmless. But I think that its going to surpass tube based Night Vision in both quality and features at some point in the not too distant future.

There have been other digital night viewers which cost about the same as a decent gen 1, but they werent any better than a Night Shot Camcorder and werent that good without a LOT of IR.

Then Xenonic came out with their Digital NV for about $1300. That one is pretty good, but still not as good as a gen 3…

Which brings me to this –

http://www.bushnell.com/general/nightvision_monoculars_26-0542.cfm

Digital Night Vision for only $300. Has TV Out too (which the current Xenonics lacks). I’m hoping that this one is somewhere between the Meade NightView and the Xenomics….

I couldnt help myself and ordered one, Wish they had actual views through the device up on the yukon/bushnell site, would think it would be easy given its Video output……

Will do a review with hopefully some good video once it arrives. In the meantime I went trolling around the internet for as much as I could find. Airgunbbs.com has a lot more info on these than anywhere else… Google unfortunatly just seems to come back with places that sell them all with the same info..

Yukon appears to have a version of this called the Yukon Ranger 5×42. Same specs and a similar design, looks to be the same unit in a different case. Apparantly the only difference is that the Yukon costs more, comes with AC/DC adapter and has adjustable IR level, the Bushnell is fixed, I also read that the Bishnell seems better quality… Might buy both to find out.

Here are some sample images I found on the Yukon site… Looks better than I expected so far.

Here’s Video from a guy on the AirgunBBs. Quality looks good…. Certainly good enough for what I want, which is this –

Graet review as always Ross.
Did I miss the part about how you can mount that to your rifle or scope?
Thanks

I hadnt got to that bit yet. Need to get the right size plumbing coupler.

Yeah, much better than the video I took. Photobucket really does a number on my video’s for some reason.

Those videos look fantastic. You can even see the pellet going downrange.

I’ve seen that it can be from video’s posted on youtube –

But like you thought, the magnification is going to be pretty high – even with a 3x scope that will give you 15x (I think thats how it works.. 3×5, not 3+5 if anyone can correct me on this please).

Thanks YN for the write up.

Can this be used behind a scope or does the 5X hoze that option?

Jim,

I sold the M1 when I sold the Gen 3.

The Bushnell arrived today shortly after the gun.

Here’s the Bushnell with all the accessories… Case, RCA output cable and a lens cloth.

Close up of the top

Bottom

The Main Lens, Small IR Emitter and the Long range Emitter.

Back

Smaller than I expected and initially the quality seemed pretty good. Until I went to wipe a fingerprint off the small IR emitter and the cover popped into the frame. No way of getting it back into place without splitting the casing in half and I’m not going to do that to something thats going back tomorrow.

I turned it on in my house in well lit room and it worked fine, good image, no flaring or problems that you’d get with a Tube based Night Vision. Just looked like a B&W camera image (which is what it is basically).

The brightness and detail was better than I expected. It certainly surpasses my Sony Camcorders Night Shot mode.

With just the small IR turned on (you cant turn the small one off, its on all the time) its a pretty good image, even beyond the range of the small IR and just some ambient light.

With the Long Range IR on the image is a lot better within area the IR covers and it brings out a lot more detail just like with Gen 1. The IR is very powerful and easily reaches out to my neighbours car 70 yards away.

I then connected it to my Camcorder and the picture the device sends via the RCA output to my camcorder screen is VASTLY superior to the image displayed on the bushnell’s small eyepeice screen. Bushnell display looks washed out and lacks the detail that is obviously there, but just not taken advantage of by the cheap eyepeice screen. Thats pretty dissapointing to me as I’d be using the screen more than an external display.

Overall it preforms better than I expected. I’d much rather have less magnification as 5x limits its use as a monocular as far as I am concerned.

I took some video footage, The car people should recognise from my other NV write ups. Thats 70 yards away, sorry about the shake at the start. The picnic bench and target are about 30 yards away.

I think this is better than Gen 1 for sure, but its also more expensive than some Gen 1 units. It has good range and a nice viewable image that fills the screen… somewhat wasted when you limit its field of view with 5x magnification though. The Direct RCA output is nice.. Its not as good as Gen 2 or 3 despite the makers claim to the contrary… not by a long shot, price wise its a good value compared to gen 2, but Gen 2 and 3 have it beat hands down in terms of resolution and light amplification. This device needs an IR or ambient light source just as much as Gen 1 does.

The Yukon comes tomorrow. The specs are supposed to be better on that, I’m really hoping that includes the eyepeice display.

What surprised me about this one is that its made in Russia, just like the Yukon… why they lowered the spec I dont know, or maybe thats just a line I was fed by the retailer to explain the higher price. Will find out tomorrow.

Looking forward to this YN you do awsome NV reviews!

Can you try the surefire M1 with it also?

Jim.

I ordered the Yukon Ranger this morning…. I’d hate to think I ordered the lesser version so I’ll compare the two and keep the one I like.

I did contact the seller before buying the second unit and they didnt have a problem with me trying it out (They are both demo’s so he doesnt have to worry about selling an open box item).

Should get the Bushnell today !

The video and pictures look good so far. The other Digital NV I’ve used have sucked – The old bushnell and the rebranded meade version of the bushnell.

I’ll be comparing it against similar priced devices… Wouldnt be fair for me to put it up against a Gen 3 that cost me $1500. Wont say I wont expect a lot out of it, but it’s a $300 device and the Gen 3 costs 5x more.

I got 14 days to return it… couldnt pass the opportunity. I’ve had about 10 different NV and played with a couple of dozen…. Cant help myself.

ye i know what u r saying yellow mate well worth a good look at for that price ain,t it .. 😀
