Q:

big bore shroud help

Got a 9mm conversion kit in today for the Condor and it became immediately apparent that I need one HELL OF A SHROUD. This thing is loud! 😀 😈 Anyone got dimensions for a shroud that will quiet this thing down? I don’t think the normal 1″od al tube is going to cut it unless I make it like 2 feet long.

My shroud from Tony (.25 cal), on a 21″ barrel is about 10 3/8″ with about another 3/4″ up in the frame. Very effective.

I think this question relates to the topic.

I am getting a 21″ .22 barrel for my stock ss. How long of a piece of 1″ OD aluminum tubing would I need to quit it down to about the stock sound level? I am not talking silent here, just enough so my neighbors wont think I am shooting a .22 LR.

I’d use that 3-4x factor as a minimum starting point. The factor is bigger for centerfires. You have a trade off between size and effect.

There is a direct relationship between bore volume and required can volume. I don’t have a reference for airguns. Just experience with trial and error. There are other things that also affect sound.

Another huge factor is air usage. One could be grossly overvalved and simply wasting air. Get that squared away before trying to quiet it down.

For the Talon/Condor setup, I’d start by adjusting the tophat with a chronograph. There will be a point where velocity peaks but noise increases. This is all wasted air. Turn back down until you can affect the velocity again. This is where I leave my tophat and power wheel adjusted.

The same theory exists for all airguns.

Big holes are hard to quiet down. Same goes in powderburners.

A good starting point would be a target of 3-4 times the barrel swept volume for a finished shroud volume (not including baffles or internals).

Thanks, will get out the calculator and see how that compares to what I had in mind. Is there a reference you got that number from? Seems like would not be enough volume, would like to know more about where that bit of info came from.

Oh, in that case you can afford to have a solid 8″ and still have a rifle that is not so long, and with a 2″+ diameter shroud you should get what you are looking for. The same principles will apply as with any small bore shroud: lots of expansion space and unequally sized chambers are the order of the day.

18″ barrel. Thinking of starting with a 2.25 dia at about 8″ length. Not looking to make totally silent like my .25, just quieter so as not to bother neighbors.

I think that the general consensus amongst those that shoot Big Bore is that noise is simply something that comes with the territory. That being said, it will be possible (obviously) to deal with the noise but you may end up with something that is cumbersome in size. What is the length of the 9mm barrel?

How about 2 inches wide?

Thats kind of the startin point I had in mind, but was hoping for some input from the guys that had already dealt with the big bore noise issue.
