Best heavyweight pellet (sub sonic) in .22 calibre ?
Hi,
new to this forum, previously on old TOG forum.
Have had some work done to my stealth by Sean…blodknob valve, 24 ” shrouded .22 LW polygone barrel .Gun is quiet as a mouse when fired except when pellet strikes some distance away and you get a loud supersonic crack.
I have two questions here………..
Firstly can anyone explain why you hear the supersonic crack on impact,,is it because there is a rapid transition back through the sound barrier ?
Secondly, whilst still wanting to keep the power, I have tried using heavier pellets to keep velocity sub sonic but maintain impact energy. Tried eley wasp magnums which are solid 30 grain pellets and look like the tip of a rimfire .22 but they are too tight to enter the breech and have to be tapped in quite hard ( I do not have this problem with any other ammo). Consequently, they do not seem to exit with much velocity, in fact they performed better in the 12″ barrel.
My question is can anyone recommend a good accurate heavyweight pellet, possibly avaiable in the uk?
Thanks
Richard

In reply to last post – no it’s definately much louder than the standard crack and it doesn’t matter what you hit, you’ve got to hear it to experience it, if you’ve got a gun that’s capable of achieving supersonic speeds you’ll know what i mean. Up the pellet weight so the speed becomes sub sonic and the impact noise is no different from a standard air gun even though the fpe is c. 70 ft lbs !
