Q:

Already Impatient

The term “Patience hell, I want to kill something” applies directly to me. Today I ordered an 18″ .22 barrel from Pyramid with hopes it is here by Friday. My problem is, I don’t want to wait that long to see for myself what it is going to produce.

To those who have experience with a stock .22 SS and have upgraded from a 12″ barrel to the 18″ barrel, what can I expect from this thing such as:
1. added weight
2. accuracy
3. power gain

I am hooked on the 21.1 gr Kodiaks and thats what I’m sticking with unless someone has found something else that works better in this barrel.

Saugus18, any air valve or hammer mods along with the 18” or is stock. Also have you chronyed the Kodiaks?

The gun is stock except for barrel. I did have it cronied once. I only had 1 fill to work with when I did it, I think I started at about 2800 psi, which sent 14.3 at a 949, and stayed in the 940’s for a while. By the time I started testing Kodiaks, the pressure was way lower, and did them in the 840’s. If I did the Kodiaks earlier I’m sure they would have been at least in the 850’s. I also have no clue where to set the top hat for this particular gun for best performance, I really need to get a crony and do some serious testing to sort all that out. So, basically it’s mid 900’s for 14.3, mid 800’s for 21.1 Kodiaks, sorry can’t be more precise right now, I went to a friends place who had a crony just to get a idea of what the gun was doing with the new barrel.

Now thats what I’m talking about Kenny. Thanks for the post and pics. You’ve got me even more anxious now !!!!!!

Just to be fair, I’ll add that the target box has been weakened over a long time shooting pellets into it, it’s not like the box just blew out when changing barrels, but this barrel definitely was the last straw for the box! Also, the 2X4 I have is lighter and less dense than the average 2X4, but still, I’m doing things I wasn’t able to do previous.

You quickly get the urge to want and try shooting things at farther distances, which is hard for me to do in my neighborhood. There is a rifle range that welcomes airgunners very close to where I live, so I’ll be going there to test it out. Tell us what you think of the barrel Rick, I think you’ll like it.

Imagine a .25cal Condor with a Talon Tune!!! 😯

You know, when I post this kind of stuff I can almost hear the guys with the 80 ft lb Condors snickering… 😉

Here’s some pics I took since new barrel has been put on. I put my target box on one of those portable fold up “Workmate” type stands that you can tote with you to put chop saws on ect. It’s made of pretty strong sheet metal. You can see here the difference between the 12″ and 18″ barrels. The 12 couldn’t push the Kodiaks thru, even on full power, but the 18″ pushed them thru the sheet metal legs no problem, and only with PW on 4. I’m sure I could blast thru thicker metal with the power turned up.

Here’s a 2X4

And here’s what my target box looks like now. The backside of it has 1/4″ steel plates inside to stop the pellets, which now hit so hard the pellet fragments have blown out the plywood on the sides and top of box. Better fix this soon or I’ll have to build a stronger one. The power difference is quite obvious right away, and for me, the accuracy is just as good, if not better than the 12″. It’s almost as if the gun should have been like this in the first place.

If you think the 12″ kicks ass, your going to be really happy with the 18″ one…

Tony’s shrouds make the TalonSS sound super loud! 😯

I can say that going from the SS, if you didn’t order/make some kind of frame extender/shroud it will be MUCH more noisy!

I’ve got one of Anthony266’s custom shrouds, so got the sound problem in check. I like hearing the added fps and range. Accuracy is going to be hard to improve on over the 12″ in barrel I suspect because that barrel still leaves me in awe at how accurate it is.

Thanks for the replies and hope this thing gets here by the weekend.

With a stock valve you’ll see right around 90fps, modd that valve and add another 100fps to it.

I went from a tss in .177 to a 24″ .22 cal and the difference in impact was amazing.

Accuracy will be comparable or the same.

The additional velocity will make longer shots easier. (less holdover).

Have fun WAITING for your new toy 😆

At least it is not 6 weeks away 🙄 (Tony’s wait is well worth it).

Happy Shooting

with my 18″ barrel, the kodiaks are knocking chunks off my brick wall…pretty insane. i gotta be careful w/ target practice now! i’ll post some pictures tomorrow.

70 to over 100 yds is now much easier to obtain. You will be flinging those kodiaks at around 870fps.
