Q:

A little shooting Trip (picts)

Just before I left for the weekend to go to the Eastern Sierra to visit Bishop and Mammoth Lakes Ca. I received a package from Tony. Inside was a beautifully polished 16″ barrel I requested with a vented front bushing and an 8″ shroud. I was happy and installed it in the gun and hit the road. It was a 5 hour drive north with my wife and son.

We had some flyfishing and shooting planned. We started off with shooting and the gun performed so well we never got to the river. With the new LW polygonal .22 barrel we were consistently hitting 3-4″ birds 70 yards away and it was a huge improvement over the 12″ barrel…and I love the 12″ barrel. The gun was eating and spitting out CP with such accuracy our kill rate was increasing and higher then any other trip we have taken.

We went and picked up the wife and headed up to Mammoth Mountain to spend the day at the Devils Postpile only to find out it had snowed the night before and the road was closed.

So I decided to go to our next shooting spot in the woods.
Now you see in the center of the picture? The sandy area? Those little dark spots are pine cones. We were easily able to shoot those pine cones time and again..

Now that does not look that hard except we were shooting at them from this distance 120yds. Can you still see the sandy area with the pine cones in the center of the picture? Shooting those at that distance was a hoot and we put away the AA410 and kept shooting the Talon because it had never shot so well.:P

When doing hunting or plinking I like to shoot from a camera tripod. This allow quick scanning of the area and a stable platform to shoot from. We did not see any squirell or chipmunks as usual so outrageous airgun shooting was the event for the day. Shooting an airgun 100+ yard is great when you make pinecones dance.

The country side is beautiful and always a pleasure to spend time in.

So my fishing trip turned into a shooting trip and it was great.

Awesome scenery. I’m envious….

That is some incredible looking country there Adam and some really nice pictures of it.

Congrats again on the nice setup from Tony too.

I haven’t tried the tripod yet but had read about someone using one all the time for pest hunting and it worked great. Is your gun screwed down to it? I would have thought you’d have been shooting prone at that range! the tripod must work pretty good AND your both great shooters!

Nice post, thanks for sharing Jim.

The tripod is great to shoot from and I am too fat to lay prone to shoot 😯

I took a Vee top from a shooting stick and mounted it on to the tripod. You just rest the gun and scan the area. To get high in the trees you can go to one knee and adjust the tripod quickly for the shot close in the trees. If you are lazy just pull out the chair and have a seat. Now that is some lazy shooting… 😆

Damn King.

The good old Devils Post pile, now that brings back some fond memories. I haven’t been there in 20 some odd years or so, but is one of those places that pulls the goose bumps just thinkin about it, simply amazing stuff.
Adam If you make it back, grab a post for me, and I’ll cut some steppin stones for ya.
I think I have some pics somewhere, if I can find them I’ll post without delay.

Rabbits,

I get up there around 10x a year. It is the closes location for good flyfishing and although several hours away it is worth the drive. We camp in the summer under the trees and the winter we stay in a motel. Here is a couple of other picts of the area
Convict Lake

Hot Creek

Gull Lake

your a lucky man adam mate it looks lovely there well worth the trip eh mate .how many time,s a year do u do that sort off trip .i would be at it all the time .. lovely pics aswel mate 😀

Your lucky to be near such landscape, nice pics. Have to go up north a bit to get into gods country here in Wi. How high up are those mountains and is it common for snow already? In Wi. it has been unusually mild fall, just 1 mild frost so far. Most trees still have the leaves on them. Most years they are mostlly leaf bare.

nice pics Adam… I’d love to spend a week or two hiking in that kind of landscape.
