.457 Talon
Many of you know i mess around with some bigbore stuff in the talon frames….
this is my latest project, a 30″ DAQ barrel in .457
Barrel is mounted like most AF barrels allthough with just one bushing
Valve is home made in an attempt to make the most power i possibly can
and heres the video clip of it being assembled….and fired
its just a few FPE shy of reaching my goal of 500 fpe, but this is at 3000 psi, im shure if i fill to 3200-3500 psi i will produce alot more…valve travel is .140″

I’m curious if you think that a little more weight on the trigger would help or hurt. I remember it was quite the surprise when that thing went off.
Pretty awesome. Not everyone gets to shoot a 600fpe gun!
i haven proven i can make a 600 fpe rifle(my personal goal was 500 fpe which suprisingly got shattered once i figured it all out)….now i gotta make it easier to shoot.
i think alot of the problem is me….cause i have a tendancy to flinch and not follow through when i shoot that rifle…and i gotta work on that
another thing i think might help is some weight….those talons are butt heavy….where as the china conversions…daq’s, gargoyles…all have a resivoir out there under the barrel to weigh it down….
so what im going to do is to make a muzzlebrake for it…i might make an anti recoil device for it too a floating weight inside the frame but im holding off with that for now, as it might upset accuracy even more with a moving weight
Once you figure out how to deal with that recoil (I shot that BEAST and know it will take some getting used to!) it will be nice to see some long-range groups. You should try to get to this one Cygnus. Eric said he could most likely hook-up a hunt at the same time.
I know you were feeling like wrapping that thing around a tree until Leroy said “I don’t know what more you want out of this thing” and asked you to join him in checking out a nice group he shot with it.
That rifle of yours is one bad motor scooter!!! I had forgotten those bullets weighed that much.
CygnusX’s BigBore has a bit more that 604fpe. Those 500 grainers were over bore size in diameter; meaning .460-.461 or so. If they were properly sized to, say, .458.
I can’t even say. I little fps gain is a lot of power when your talking about a 500grain bullet!

Hey blackops……man what a shame you couldnt have gone with us…it was awesome !
i posted the hunting story in the hunting section…..
but i fell that i need to mention something here as well
the rifle has now officially passed the 600 fpe mark…..at the ranch i had a chanche to shoot some of Butcher’s 500 grains…..one came out at 73X i cant remember the exact number…and another at 738 FPS thats a whopping 604.8 FPE !!!
i had some accuracy issues….which i think was down to my inability to shoot such a hard recoiling bigbore….since Leroy (who makes Gargoyle bigbore rifles) where able to shoot nice groups with it. i could put 2-3 shots touching each other….and then there would be a flyer far away from the group but still on paper….which was probably due to me
CygnusX is insane 😆 can’t wait to hear about the Hog Hunt!!! Wish I could have gone with him and not had school come up 😥 he should have some great slo-mo video of his hunt.
Jim.
The meplat on that bullet (Lyman#45266) is considerably smaller than the WFN bullets. Those WFN’s will leave a much bigger hole and bring more energy to the target for sure. This one’s a 210 grainer.
nice cant wait to give them a go
@rob3dr….you dont see the recoil…as it was captured in highspeed…and then stretched about 4 times….which equals to about 400 frames per second….
it has a really good kick to it…actually so much so that i added a 250gram endcap, and stuffed a trirail and dovetail to weaver converter on it to weigh it down….for walking hunting i would prolly go light with it again…and remove all the extra’s….but for sitting in a tree shooting a pig…i wanted it somewhat heavy…especially getting some weight out in the front….shooting a roundball which is what was on the video doesnt kick much….but when the 400 grains starts to fly….it gets nasty
I’m surprised there is no more kick to it than shown in the video. My DAQ seems to kick far worse. Must be some ultra efficient use of air going on. In either case, great job… 😯 Now go out and shoot a T-Rex with that puppy!
I will get right on it!
BUTCHER45
ILL TAKE 2 BOXES OF THE 400 GRAIN THEN TO START WITH !
That’s the best part man. They only cost $32 for 250! they may go $35 in the dead soft but that is way over two times the bullet weight with an actual design for about the same price as roundball. Can’t beat that with a stick!!
sounds good…i would love to try them out…and if they are not too exspensive i would like to buy some from you…there stores around here has nothing i can use
i just like the roundball cause they are cheap….super fast…end in AC putty at least have expanded pretty nice
tomorrow i will be machining a bunch of .405 grain HC so it only rides on 2 small bands…..
my barrel is a DAQ .457 at least that what was written on it when i got it…
.450-453 seems a tad loose….i got some 230 grain that the guy in the store said was as soft as it comes…they do about 900 fps (400 fpe)
Your not going to be using roundball in that thing are you? How do .454 bullets work for you just out of curiosity? PLEASE use the bullets I am bringing instead I will arrange to get you some .457 sized 400grainers with big meplats in dead soft lead. They will give you three times the wound channel boosting killing power dramatically over roundball.
I don’t even think there is a commercially available “hard cast” roundball commercially avaialable since it is always fired in black powder guns that like soft lead. I think most all roundball is swaged from dead soft lead.
I did a test of my own comparing the soft and hard lead velocities. Going from dead soft lead to only a BHN hardness of 8 or 9 (still considered pretty soft in BP land but a whopping %90 harder than dead soft lead) cost me about 40fps with the 210 grainers. I also tested some 155grainers that beat roundball in velocity in many BP revolvers and they were only going around 680fps while roundball goes at least 850fps out of my gun.
Cygnus you have such an abundance of power there I would love to see you use one of these large meplat bullets on a hog to put all of your guns power into that hog. I promise the exit hole will be fantastic! The entrance wound will be awfully burly as well.
I am arranging to have some fully lubed bullets sent straight to Shiloh. If you want I will do what I can to have some of these 45-70’s delivered. Is your barrel sized .457 or .458? When cast from the dead soft lead they will be right at about 400grains. There is a drastic decrease in bearing surface that should increase velocity even more. That would likely be the baddest rifle/bullet combo at the ranch as you should be busting about 650+fpe with that (and that is my conservative estimate).
I’m having the bottom design (210grain.454) made up in dead soft for my rifle. .32 meplat!!

i could add a little more weight to the trigger….but i like them light to begin with…..and thats an inherent design of the talon….i culd add some more spring weight to it…but now that i discored the real secret behind the trigger (middle part) im not so sure i want to add any more
however more weight around the barrel….thats another story
