Q:

$120.00 Vs $650.00 Scope World

I just recently removed my BSA Sweet .223 off of My Savage and replaced it with this Leupold VXIII 6.5 X 20 40mm. The point I am trying to make here sort of dawned on me today and I wanted to share it with folks. Many times we wonder about higher $$ scopes right? Ever imagine about a higher $$ scope after spending some quality time with a lesser scope on a favorite rifle of sort even after you have made some very fine shots?
I have…., I have also used Leupold before too. On my .17 Cal HMR I use a VXII 18 Power and the glass is nicer. But today I was sighting my larger VXIII on this Savage I have and even though the glass is quite a bit nicer I thought to myself is it really more fun? Is it really worth it? It then dawned on me that the BSA Sweet for approximately $120.00 was a very nice scope and I have killed over 84 of these squirrels with some shots out to 120 yards. And then another thing dawned on me. I have these books called “Out of Nowhere” and “Sniper” by Martin Pegler and I then recalled reading and noticing some of the legendary war marksmen and sharp shooters from Germany and Russia and USA and back then all of them had Scopes that were not all that good compared to todays standards in even lesser scopes. I read about all kinds of problems regarding mounts coming loose and scopes sliding forward with recoil. Scopes coming apart inside from the frozen conditions and recoil. Man what a pain in the ass compared to my problems with scopes and my Squirrels don’t shoot back either ! 😆

Now I like my investment so don’t get me completly wrong here. I wanted a scope that was about matched in value to the rifle.
However for what it’s worth if you have a scope on a rifle and it doesn’t move on you and it is tight and you can do your shooting and or hit what you wish,… then don’t fix it if it ain’t broke. I shot this thing today and it was fun and I am pleased but that BSA Sweet for the money did the trick as well also.
Here is a shot of my Savage and my Leupold when I was mounting it today before I went out to the field.
I also really enjoy this Ultimate Sniper Stock designed by Major Plaster. It has some cool features. I moved the cheek rest forward and removed a spacer in the recoil butt and then dropped the recoil butt down a tad.

If this Leupold breaks or dies the Leupold company will replace it or repair it free for life. Can’t go wrong with that. But if it gets bad enough I will put something like that BSA Sweet .223 back on or even a Center Point or Leapers Airgun scope on this and I bet it would kick some serious butt!

It’s crazy here in Killeen. The worlds largest military base is here. Well, largest in the free world anyway. Who knows what the chi-coms have!

killeen has grown from 40,000 to 125000 in the last two years.

Crime is terrible. We doubled Houston in break-in’s and home invasions in 2007. and Houston has a couple mil. in population!

Knifemaker, how’s the construction industry in Texas? DFS I was in Fresno yesterday pouring concrete. I drive a mixer for Cemex. I can’t believe how big Fresno’s getting, Clovis and fresno have met in the middle. I remember when Merced was 20,000 now we’re at 80,000. Still small by Fresno standards.

Ted is as wild as they come! In a good way! I use to have an Archery shop. That is how we met. He moved a few years ago to central Texas. Detroit was getting too bad!

We’ve be on a few hunts together. He is wicked with a bow. But I’m better Haa!

Didn’t Ted have a cool place in Detroit?
He moved to Texas eh?…
Yeah…I rememebr the Double Live Gonzo Tour here in Fresno’s Selland Arena back in 70-something….
I rememebr one year after that tour he came to Fresno again with a band called DC Hawks. And I remember Ted’s Black Birdland guitar slipped off his strap and flew off or him about three to four feet in front of him and landed flat on it’s back. he quickly picked it up and reconnected it and said “Sometimes she gets away freom me,…But she ain’t getting away from no more”…
It was a classic Ted Nugentism Moment.
of the 4 times I saw the Nuge I think that Gonzo Tour was the best! Man he went fucking crazy! And then so did we.
That was a magic night. In fact…that reminds me,… After the show it took me and my friend in his Cougar at least 45min to get out of the parking lot. Once we got up to the main exit they blocked us off and out came Ted’s Limo! They held us for a minuet and then let us go and so we went off screaming after him. We caught up to him and I was hanging out the window and I could see Ted’s white suspenders and large hair and large white teeth. Ted wouldn’t even look over at us. My friend drove his car over so I could almost knock on his window but Ted still would not even look at me. I also noticed a pretty Blond lady in the car with him.

Yeah…A night to remember.
None of his other gigs were like that night in Fresno that I saw.

😆 “Rock N Roll”
Here is some of my gear. This weekend I found a Bonham Amber Vistalite 73 reissue for only $2100.00!! So I snatched it up! I play drums quite a bit. I have also played guitar for just about 29 years. My friends tell me I could be in Terrible Teds Band. It would be an Honor too so don’t get me wrong on that note now. My Blue Sparkle fade Yamaha is inspired by none other than Tommy Aldridge.
Take a peak.

Yeah, Ted and I are old friends. Oddly enough I havent seen him since he move here to
Texas. Go Figure, He has a few Lovett Knives!

Which reminds me. I bought a Zeiss Conquest Sat.. Can’t wait to get this bad boy mounted! Got t be better than the Banner!!!

Small World eh? I am in Fresno Co. At a friends farm.
I live in Fresno.

Hey slayer, I noticed your a lefty like me. Also noticed your in central cal. like me. Where do you hunt squirrels? I do most of mine in Mariposa county.

You want to have some fun. Just shoot at the distance you want then turn the power up on your scope until the POI matches one of the mildots.

I set my scope on 6x for most hunting. When I am plinking I will shoot and increase the magnification until it is dead on a mildot. Then shoot at that distance all I want. Then do it again for another distance….lol

the legend is sigted in…it me not doing my homework….i just havent got it set like the old tasco….

the tasco i knew milldot 1 low was for 15-20 yards….between center and milldot1 for 30 yards…or dead on for shooting up in a tree…

now going from 10x zoom to 15 changes that, and the distance between the milldots are not the same either….

i got it set now so it should be pretty much dead on at 15 yards….and i think zeroed at 50…but im not sure….

my range only has 25-50 yards…then 100-and 200, and no plinking…no setting targets out at various distances…and MA prohibits plinking in public hunting areas…so technically cant practice there either…

i like to put out paintballs at various distances….and then practice hitting them until i know where im at….just gotta find the place

Cyg,

You are so right. Going from Leapers to a Legend was really a pleasure and I regret not doing it sooner. Then my good friend from Hawaii aka Dirty Harry sent me a Bushnell 3200 and that scope is awesome. I am now set up pretty well and I wish I had bought one of these in the past. The cost of the Legend is a great deal and the price fades away as the satifaction increases.

Yeah…keep sighting it in and work with it and see if you can get used to it.
I know the feeling.
From BSA To Leupold. I am waiting for some good Burris I ordered. I think one problem I was having was needing some real good quality rings and lap them so they are true and then mount it solid and true to the bore.
😉

i recently made the switch from tasco varmint 2.5-10×44 to a bushnell legend

i would think the tasco is like the BSA, its good in the daylight and i thought it was the perfect scope especially with the price in mind

then i got the Legend and thats like switching from stadarrt definition tv to hidef…well maybe not as pronounced…but a very big change !

color definition is much better…but that wont make me a better shot

usage at dusk, is where the legend shines….its stays useable much longer than the tasco.

when it gets city dark….the legend is miles ahead

but with all these benefits…i must say i was more accurate with the tasco…possibly because i have used it longer and was comfortable with it…the legend introduced more zoom which i have to get used to and figure out where poi is

i also got a 4200 6-24×40….this is even better than the legend…but honestly…the legend is 160-200$ and the 4200 is 400$….the 4200 aint twice as good….the legend is about 90% of what the 4200 his opticly…imho….turrets on 4200 is better…but the legend was nice and accurate too

if i was to get another scope…it would probably be another legend

Thats awesome! Do you or did you hunt with the Nuge? I have played guitar for almost 30 years and I play drums quite well too. I can play many Nugent songs but I don’t play a Hollow body guitar. “Birdland”

Do you really know Mr. Nugent?
I have never had the honor of hunting with the Weekend Warrior. I suppose my Coyotes and Squirrels might not interest him.
If I had the land and the ability to invite him to a worthy place I would do so and then once he saw my musical rig he would probably import me to one of his stage worthy bands.

Maybe…
8)

As Ted Nugent use to tell me when he saw a good target in the field. “Garlic, and Butter” Mike, Get the Gatrlic and Butter!!! We’re about to eat!!!

Now thats really cool! 😉

Awesome.. Wisj I could have taken that shot with your gun as I read that!
Must have been fun!
