I'm surprised this forum isn't booming. It's not often you come across a free tool on the web like softchrono.
It really is a great idea.
I was intrigued about this freeware package and thought I would try it.
I found the ascii autosaved file - very cool. This is a very good idea!
I got some fairly wild readings on this unit the first time I've tried it, (I suspect I got one velocity recording that was in the ballpark out of 10 shots recorded - but I think this is mostly due to microphone problems and possibly echo as well - I am using it outdoors. Tomorrow I will try it again using a different microphone and after having read further posts in this forum regarding softchrono.
If I can get this honed down some, I will be testing a centerfire pistol with it.
Thank you mcMike ! |

Another sequence today.
I do not believe this is as dependable as a chronograph.
Out of a string of 15 shots, I had about 8 probable errors. This means that 7 samples out of 15 were "in the ballpark" of what this ammo/gun combo should produce for velocity.
Here is the data:
Date and time Shot # Velocity distance bullet mass volume volume delta smpl.
8/1/2010 16:44 2 1498.12734 50 40 80 30 3204 96000
8/1/2010 16:46 3 1092.39873 50 40 80 41 4394 96000

8/1/2010 16:57 11 1153.01465 50 40 65 75 4163 96000
8/1/2010 16:59 12 1153.01465 50 40 65 75 4163 96000
8/1/2010 17:00 13 1105.73601 50 40 65 75 4341 96000
8/1/2010 17:00 14 1154.12359 50 40 65 75 4159 96000
As you can see, there is some fairly "wild" deviations in this string, except for shots 7-12 and shot 14. Apparently, I failed to save #1 and #15, but they were nowhere near the 1150 fps arena. Is this typical for anyone who has chrono'd .22 rimfire ammo - or are these flukes - because looking at the data, it appears as if it's just flukes.
